Our Lady of the Sacred Heart used a hot start to take control on the way to a 5-0 victory over Aquinas Academy Thursday, wrapping up the Class 1A Section 3 boys soccer championship for the Chargers.
OLSH improved to 14-0 overall on the season and 10-0 in section play with two nonsection matches remaining.
Owen Minzer scored a pair of goals and Aaron Callahan added one – all in the first 10 minutes of the game – to stake the Chargers to a 3-0 lead.
Isaac Tarbuk added two second-half goals for OLSH.
Moon Area 2, Chartiers Valley 2
Laercio de Sousa accounted for both of the Tigers’ goals, and they wound up deadlocked with the host Colts in a Class 3A Section 4 match.
Eric Haupt assisted on one goal and Hayden Dunn assisted on the other for Moon, which is now 10-5-1 overall and 9-1-1 in section play.
Bishop Canevin 3, Brentwood 0
Tyler Thamsarorat tallied a pair of goals to spark the Crusaders past the Spartans in a Class 1A Section 3 match at Bishop Canevin.
Dominic Hixenbaugh scored the final goal for Bishop Canevin while Leo Shorthouse earned the shutout in goal.
GIRLS SOCCER
Carlynton 4, Hopewell 1
Gigi Choate registered a pair of goals and Mary Crawford and Riley Mauro each contributed one as the Cougars downed the Vikings in a nonsection contest at Carlynton.
The win left the Cougars with an 8-6-1 overall record.
GOLF
WPIAL Team Championships
Both the Moon Area boys and girls teams came up short in their bids to capture a WPIAL Class 3A team golf title and move on to the PIAA Tournament Thursday in the final round of the WPIAL tournament played at Cedarbrook Gold Golf Course in Belle Vernon.
In the boys event, Moon finished with a score of 405 to tie for fourth place in the six-team field.
South Fayette won the title with a 385 total and will move on to play in the PIAA Tournament.
Moon’s girls team also failed to advance to the PIAA tournament, as the Tigers finished fifth in the eight-team field with a 366 total. Peters Township won the tournament and will represent the WPIAL at the state team tournament.
CROSS COUNTRY
MAC Championship
Moon Area sped to a first-place finish in the girls portion of Wednesday’s event, led by Elise Ashcroft’s second-place finish. Ashcroft covered the Brush Creek Park course in 19 minutes, 28.20 seconds.
Rachel Stepp placed fourth (20:58.30) and Alexis Shuler wound up 10th (21:40.60) for the Tigers.
Hailey Long of Mars Area won the race with a time of 19:20.
Montour’s top finisher was Teagan Schaltenbrand, who placed 19th in 22:21.60. Carlynton’s top finisher was Maria Leithauser, who wound up 21st in 22:26.70.
On the boys side, Moon finished second as a team. Owen Romasco was the Tigers’ top individual finisher, placing 11th in 17:14.70.
Ethan Moldovan of Carlynton was the top individual finisher among West Hills area runners, placing sixth in 16:59.90. Lucas Benson led the Montour contingent with a 14th-place finish in 17:23.80.
GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 3, New Brighton 2
The Chargers had to work a little harder than usual before pulling out the win in five sets, 21-25, 25-16, 25-17, 24-26, 15-4, to improve to 12-2 overall and 11-1 in Class 2A Section 1 action.
OLSH remains tied with Hopewell for first place in the section with two matches to go next week, including one with Hopewell.
Leah Parker led the way for OLSH with 10 kills, two aces and six digs while Jordyn Velmire had 10 assists and two digs. Other contributors for the Chargers included Julia Davoli (two kills, three aces, eight digs), Lola Garner (eight kills, an ace, five digs and a block assist), Malley Woynar (four kills, three blocks), Jenna Nastal (two kills, five aces, five digs), Sophia Wasko (two aces, 11 digs), Frankie Schlatterer (five kills, two assists, two digs), Carmella Rippole (21 assists, 1 ace, five digs), Bella Coladonato (nine kills, five aces, four digs) and Addy Batts (three kills, one assist, one dig, one block).
South Side 3, Cornell 0
The Rams posted a sweep of the Raiders, winning by set scores of 25-17, 25-11, 25-19, in a Class 1A Section 2 match at Cornell. No other details were available.
