LJ Washington scored a game-high 17 points and Sto-Rox placed three other players in double figures in a 72-35 shellacking of McGuffey Tuesday night in a WPIAL Class 3A Section 2 boys basketball game at Sto-Rox.
The win clinched a spot in the WPIAL playoffs for the Vikings, who improved to 8-13 overall and 4-5 in section play.
Sto-Rox will finish its regular season Friday against Bishop Canevin, but Vikings’ coach Ryan Hughes said after Tuesday night’s win that his team will advance to the playoffs regardless of Friday’s outcome.
The Vikings got off to a hot start Tuesday night, outscoring the Highlanders 22-11 in the first quarter, and they kept the pressure on, expanding their lead to 45-24 at halftime.
MJ Thomas added 15 points for Sto-Rox, Delaun Harris finished with 13 and Marcus Griffin contributed 11, nine of which came in the big first quarter.
Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 78, Rochester 30
Jake Johnson scored 25 points and eclipsed the 1,000-point mark for his career as the Chargers overpowered the Rams in a Class 2A Section 4 game at the Angela Activities Center.
OLSH led 23-12 after one quarter and put the game away by outscoring Rochester 27-8 in the second quarter to build a 50-20 halftime lead.
Austin Avsec scored 12 of his 16 points in the second quarter while Tiernan McCullough had all eight of his points in that quarter.
OLSH, ranked No. 3 among Class 2A schools by TribLive, improved to 17-4 overall and 12-1 in the section with the victory. The Chargers can claim at least a share of the section title with a win over South Side Area Friday.
Keystone Oaks 49, Bishop Canevin 43
Joey Colton scored 16 points and Aaron Beck had 10 of his 14 in the final quarter to help the Eagles hand the visiting Crusaders their first Class 3A Section 2 loss of the season.
The game was tight throughout, with Keystone Oaks holding a four-point halftime lead, but Bishop Canevin pulled even heading into the final quarter. That’s when Beck scored 10 of his team’s 14 points to help secure the win.
Drew Allen and Raukeem Hawkins each scored 12 points for the Crusaders and Jackson Maddix added 10.
Bishop Canevin, ranked No. 4 among Class 3A schools by TribLive, fell to 12-8 overall and 8-1 in the section.
Moon Area 68, West Allegheny 38
The Tigers shook off a sluggish first quarter with a 21-point second-quarter outburst and that proved to be the difference in a Class 5A Section 4 win over the Indians.
Jackson Bauman scored 20 points, AJ Buford added 15 and Braeden Stuart contributed 11 for Moon, which is ranked No. 2 in Class 5A by TribLive.
The Tigers improved to 17-3 overall and 8-3 in the section.
Washington 56, Carlynton 43
Tristan Reed scored 21 points, Vincent Johnson added 16 and Will Callan netted 10 as the Little Prexies downed the Cougars in a Class 3A Section 2 clash at Washington.
Washington led 14-6 after one quarter and widened that lead to 30-15 at halftime. The Cougars, led by Dewayne Fisher’s 14 points, got to within 10 points, 40-30, early in the fourth quarter but could get no closer.
Ishaga Barrie added 13 points for Carlynton, which fell to 5-16 overall and 1-8 in the section, and Mikey Jenkins added 10.
Nazareth Prep, 57, Cornell 42
Zach Frye led a balanced attack with 13 points, propelling the Saints past the Raiders in a Class 1A Section 1 contest at Nazareth Prep.
Nazareth Prep placed four players in double figures, as Grey Wible chipped in 10 and Ahsan Harrison and Tyrone Hamlin each added 10.
Cornell led 14-13 after one quarter but the Saints used a 16-10 second-quarter advantage to lead 29-24 at halftime. Nazareth Prep outscored the Raiders 28-18 in the final two quarters.
Eduardo Benitez scored 24 points to lead Cornell, which fell to 4-15 overall and 2-7 in league play.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Mars 43, Montour 30
Alexis Cashdollar’s 26 points carried the Fightin’ Planets past the Spartans in a Class 5A Section 3 game at Mars.
Montour led 22-18 at halftime, but the Spartans were limited to just eight second-half points, including one in the final eight minutes.
The Spartans, led by Brooklyn Young’s six points, fell to 12-7 overall and 4-7 in the section but they remain alive in the chase for a WPIAL playoff spot.
Northgate 29, Carlynton 26
Hope Statler scored 16 points and the Flames’ 10-3 second-quarter advantage proved to be the difference in a Class 2A Section 2 game at Carlynton.
The Cougars led by Carlee Hughes’ 13 points, played Northgate even in the final two quarters but it wasn’t enough to keep from falling to 5-13 overall and 0-8 in the section.
