Both West Hills entrants in the WPIAL boys volleyball playoffs saw their respective seasons come to an end Thursday night in the Class 2A tournament quarterfinals.
Our Lady of the Sacred Heart had the unenviable task of taking on top seed and defending champion Shaler, and the host Titans posted a 3-0 sweep, winning by scores of 25-9, 25-15, 25-13.
Meanwhile, seventh-seeded Montour traveled to take on No. 2 seed Seton LaSalle, and the Rebels advanced with a 3-1 victory.
OLSH, the No. 8 seed, opened tournament play with a 3-0 sweep of South Park Tuesday, but the Chargers were no match for Shaler.
After taking the first two sets, the Titans led just 9-6 in the third but then scored 14 of the next 15 points to build a 23-7 lead before putting the Chargers away.
OLSH coach Mike McDonald congratulated his team for a solid season, despite Thursday’s outcome.
“While the finality of the season still stings a little, the boys can be proud of getting themselves into the playoffs and overcoming some injuries and adversity along the way,” he said. “All in all, a good season.”
No details were available from the Montour-Seton LaSalle match. The Spartans reached Thursday’s quarterfinals by sweeping North Catholic in their tournament opener Tuesday.

WPIAL SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT
Neshannock 11, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 1
The Chargers saw their season come to an end in the opening round of the Class 2A playoffs, as they fell to the fifth-seeded Lancers in a game played at North Allegheny.
OLSH, seeded 12th, fell behind 2-0 in the first inning and Neshannock added three runs in the second and two in the third to take control.
The Lancers outhit the Chargers 14-4; Mya Eshenbaugh accounted for two of OLSH’s four hits and scored the Chargers’ lone run when she came in on Sydney Trippe’s sixth-inning sacrifice fly. That cut Neshannock’s lead to 8-1, but it wasn’t nearly enough as the Lancers put the game away with three runs in the bottom of the sixth.
The Chargers, who finished the season 7-8 overall, could not contain Neshannock’s Gianna Paglia, who in addition to pitching a four-hitter went 3 for 4 at the plate with a pair of doubles and drove in five runs.
Jeannette 10, Bishop Canevin 0
Grace Stein fired a one-hitter, homered and drove in three runs to help the Jayhawks beat the Crusaders in a Class 1A first-round matchup at Plum High School.
Raylin Gallik and Josie Shaw each had three hits for eighth-seeded Jeannette, which advances to play top seed Union Monday. Bishop Canevin, which was seeded No. 9, finished the season with an overall record of 5-10.
Desiah Trent had the Crusaders’ lone hit.
