Tyler Puffer went 3 for 3 and drove in a pair of runs and Michael Ivanoff yielded just one hit in a complete-game shutout as Montour whipped visiting Connellsville, 8-0, Tuesday in a WPIAL Class 5A baseball game.
Montour broke a scoreless tie with two runs in the third inning and then put the game away with a five-run fifth inning.
Puffer’s two-run single was the key blow in the third-inning rally and Lane Martinec’s two-out, two-run base hit in the seventh gave Montour a 7-0 lead.
Dalton Young and Zander Stern each had two hits, scored twice and drove in a run for the Spartans.
Connellsville’s lone hit off Ivanoff came with one out in the fourth inning. He also walked four and struck out six.
Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 10, Carlynton 0
Angelo Ursida went 2 for 2 and drove in three runs and James Hanna added a pair of RBIs to help the Chargers overpower the visiting Cougars in a four-inning Class 2A Section 3 game.
OLSH broke the game open with an eight-run second inning.
Ursida doubled home the first two runs of that inning and Hanna added an RBI double of his own to make it 5-0 after Owen Minzer’s RBI bunt single. The Chargers’ remaining three runs all scored on errors.
Wyatt Walsh had two hits for the winners. Hunter Mattern limited Carlynton to three hits and no one had more than one. Mattern struck out six and did not walk a batter.
Peters Township 5, Moon Area 1
Brad Bucci belted a three-run homer to spark a five-run third inning, leading the Indians past the tigers in a Class 5A Section 2 game at Peters Township.
Andrew Cross hit a solo home run in the sixth to account for Moon’s only run. Nick Machusko had the only other hit for the Tigers off Peters Township’s David Oberschelp, who went the distance and allowed just one walk and struck out eight.
Bishop Canevin 15, Monessen 0
A 10-run first-inning rally that started with two outs and no one on base proved to be the difference as the Crusaders trounced the Greyhounds in a Class 1A Section 3 game that went just three innings.
Jakob Zahler had three hits, scored twice and drove in four runs while Nate Astor slugged a three-run homer and added another RBI for Bishop Canevin. Jackson Maddix had two hits and two RBIs and Brooklyn Harvey drove in two runs and scored twice.
Maddix held the Greyhounds hitless in three innings. He walked three and struck out eight.
SOFTBALL
Montour 10, Upper St. Clair 8
Cayley Hughes had three hits and drove in three runs and the Spartans came from behind in the late innings to knock off the host Panthers in a wild Class 5A Section 3 game.
Montour bolted to a 5-0 lead after two innings, with Hughes, Paige Fiedler and Alexa Richardson each delivering run-scoring hits in a four-run first inning. But Upper St. Clair struck for seven runs in the third to take a 7-5 lead.
Montour tied the score with two runs in the top of the fifth before the Panthers reclaimed the lead with a run in the bottom of the inning.
The Spartans went ahead for good with two in the sixth. Hughes tied the score with an RBI single and Natalie Ciamacco’s RBI single gave Montour a 9-8 lead. Hughes’ run-scoring single in the seventh finished the scoring.
Moon Area 9, Chartiers Valley 3
Ashlyn Sheffler had two hits and drove in three and Sydney Ray went 3 for 4 with an RBI to pace the Tigers past the Colts in a Class 5A Section 3 contest at Chartiers Valley.
Moon scored at least one run in every inning, snapping a 2-2 tie with a single run in the second and then gradually pulling away for the win.
The Tigers totaled 13 hits, with Abbie Warnagiris and Alina McMahon each finishing with two. Addyson Warren drove in two runs while Katie DeMarco and Warnagiris each had an RBI.
DeMarco went the distance on the mound for Moon, limiting the Colts to six hits while walking just one and striking out eight.
Bishop Canevin 16, Avella 4
Zoe Goodwin had two hits and drove in five runs as the Crusaders romped past the Eagles in a five-inning non-section game at Avella.
Bishop Canevin spotted the host team a 4-0 lead after two innings before scoring three runs in the third, six in the fourth and seven in the fifth.
Lizzy Fuchs added a hit and drove in three runs for the Crusaders. Macie McClain struck out nine in picking up the win for Bishop Canevin.
Chartiers-Houston 13, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 0
Kiera Drilak banged out two doubles and a triple and drove in six runs to power the Buccaneers past the Chargers in a Class 2A Section 3 game.
Brooklyn Hess added three hits and scored three times for Chartiers-Houston.
Taryne Drilak held the Chargers hitless in the five-inning game. She walked just one and struck out seven.
South Side 14, Carlynton 6
Madison Morrow and Emma DeLong each slugged home runs and drove in three to help the Rams beat the Cougars in a non-section game.
Maya Ringhoff had three hits and drove in three runs for the winners, who took control with four-run outbursts in the third and fourth innings.
Carlee Hughes led Carlynton with a pair of hits and drove in a run while Ava Kimberling had a hit and drove in two.
BOYS VOLLEYBALL
Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 3, Montour 1
Paddy Altmar racked up 18 kills and three blocks and had plenty of help from his teammates as the Chargers pulled out a 25-23, 16-26, 25-23, 25-20 victory at the Angela Activities Center.
Brady Rooney finished with 13 kills, one dig and three blocks while Isaac Tarbuk totaled 12 kills, an ace and three digs.
Also contributing to the win were Aiden Curry, who had two kills, 43 assists, one ace, four digs and a block; Ryan Bridge, who had one kill and four blocks; and Oliver Tomsic, who had one kill and one block.
North Allegheny 3, Moon Area 0
The defending WPIAL champions swept Moon, 25-13, 25-13, 25-14, in a Class 3A Section 1 match.
Logan Anderson-Stewart and Ayden Anderson-Simmons each had seven kills for Moon, which fell to 0-2 in section play. Shane Johns led the defensive effort with eight digs and Henrik Wright registered 15 assists.
FLAG FOOTBALL
Sto-Rox 24, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 20
The Vikings returned a pair of interceptions for touchdowns, and that proved to be the difference in a Section 4 victory over the Chargers.
OLSH led at halftime but the two second-half pick-sixes gave Sto-Rox the win.
Kamiyah Thompson scored a touchdown, made good on a two-point conversion and returned an interception for a touchdown for Sto-Rox. Rae Johnson also had a pick six for the Vikings, and Viyhshaela Macon scored on a two-point conversion.
Lola Garner passed for three touchdowns, two of which went to Shae Trombetta, for the Chargers. Julia Davoli caught Garner’s other TD toss. Charlotte Gauntner and Jules Goshen each converted a point after touchdown while Goshen and Garner each had an interception on defense.
Moon Area 32, Aliquippa 6
Kendall Dydek and Avery Pacheco each scored a pair of touchdowns and Juls Corrado added another to lead the Tigers past the Quips in a Section 4 game.
Maria Cortes led the defensive effort with a pair of interceptions while Pacheco and Corrado each picked off one. Alyssa Naim registered a pair of sacks for Moon, which dropped a 31-13 decision to Steel Valley Monday night.
