Four West Hills high school teams will see their seasons extended for at least another week, as they earned berths in the WPIAL baseball playoffs.
Brackets for the annual tournament were unveiled Friday, and Moon Area and Montour both made the grade in Class 5A.
Our Lady of the Sacred Heart will compete in the Class 2A tournament and Bishop Canevin is in the Class 1A event.
Moon Area, which won the Section 2 title with a 9-3 mark, is seeded No. 4 and will meet 13th-seeded Baldwin at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 12, at Peterswood Park in Peters Township. Moon is 15-4 overall.
Baldwin placed third in Section 4 with a 7-3 record and is 11-3 overall.
Montour is seeded No. 8 and will battle ninth-seed West Allegheny at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Boyce Mayview Park in Upper St. Clair.
Montour went 8-2 in Section 4 play and finished a game behind first-place Thomas Jefferson. The Spartans will bring an overall record of 15-5 into next week’s tournament.
In Class 2A, OLSH will meet New Brighton at 4 p.m. Monday, May 11, at Pullman Park in Butler.
The Chargers are the No 6 seed after finishing 9-3 in Section 3, good for a tie for second place with Riverview, a game in back of South Side. OLSH is 13-7 overall while New Brighton, which finished 7-5 in section play and tied with Shenango four fourth place in Section 2, is 8-7 overall.
The Chargers dropped their final regular-season game, 6-4, to Obama Academy at PNC Park Friday.
OLSH jumped to a 4-0 lead but was held in check the rest of the way. Obama cut the lead to 4-3 with two runs in the fifth and then went in front for good with three runs in the sixth.
Chad Minton and Wyatt Walsh each had two hits for OLSH while Owen Minzer, James Hanna, Walsh and Angelo Ursida each had RBIs.
In Class 1A, Bishop Canevin is the 12th seed and will face No. 5 seed Leechburg at 4 p.m. Monday at West Mifflin.
The Crusaders went 3-5 to finish in a tie for third place in Section and they’re 6-12 overall entering tournament play.
Leechburg finished second in section 2 with a 7-3 record and is 9-7 overall.
BOYS VOLLEYBALL
WPIAL Tournament seedings
Both Montour and Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, which tied for second in Class 2A Section 4, earned berths in the WPIAL tournament, which starts next week.
The Spartans, who went 5-5 in section play and are 9-6 overall, are seeded seventh and will host 10th seed North Catholic at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
North Catholic went 5-3 to finish second in Section 1 and is 6-9 overall.
Eighth-seeded OLSH, which also went 5-5 in section play, is 10-6 overall going into its tournament Saturday.
The Chargers will host South Park, the No. 9 seed, at 7 p.m. Tuesday. South Park went 4-4, good for third place in Section 3 and is 7-9 overall.
In a regular-season finale on Thursday, Montour downed Hopewell 3-1, winning by set scores of 26-24, 13-25, 25-20 and 26-24. Chris Burik led the way with 16 kills and two blocks and Wyatt Bucek had 11 kills and five blocks. Owen Ireland had 30 digs and an ace and Ben Slifkey had 17 digs and 47 assists.
SOFTBALL
Springdale 4, Bishop Canevin 3
The Dynamos edged the Crusaders in a non-section season finale. Macie McClain struck out 12 Springdale hitters for Bishop Canevin.
