High school sports: Bishop Canevin baseball clinches tie for section crown

Kellen Andruscik went 2 for 2 and drove in three runs and Bishop Canevin came back from an early 5-3 deficit to beat Serra Catholic, 9-7, Thursday and clinch a tie for the Class 1A Section 3 baseball title.

The win left the Crusaders with an 8-2 section record, the same as Eden Christian Academy. Serra Catholic fell to 6-2 with Thursday’s loss to Bishop Canevin and has two section games remaining against Sewickley Academy.

Bishop Canevin, 9-5 overall, trailed 3-0 after half an inning but tied the score in the bottom half of that frame, thanks in part to Andruscik’s two-run double.

After the Crusaders yielded two more runs to Serra Catholic in the top of the second, Kyle Olszewski delivered an RBI double and scored on a passed ball to tie the score. Andruscik came through with an RBI single, as did Aaryn Edwards, and the Crusaders led 7-5.

Olszewski went 3 for 3 and scored three runs and Tyler Maddix also scored three runs.

Olszewski also gave the Crusaders solid work in relief, pitching the final five innings and giving up just four hits and one unearned run. He walked five and struck out five.
