Kole Olszewski’s two-run single highlighted a 15-run second-inning outburst as Bishop Canevin waltzed to a 19-0 victory over Monessen Wednesday in the first game of a WPIAL Class 1A Section 3 baseball matchup.
The Crusaders finished the sweep by pounding the Greyhounds by the same 19-0 score in the nightcap, as Layne Gerba held Monessen hitless in the four-inning contest.
In the opener, Olszewski finished with three hits and three RBIs while Kellen Andruscik added three hits, scored three times and drove in a run.
Brady Wagner also had a big day, driving in five runs, scoring three times and collecting a pair of hits, one of which was a triple. Jamin Brock had two hits, scored twice and drove in three runs in the win.
Tyler Maddix went the first two innings and struck out five while yielding only a walk to pick up the win. The game went only three innings due to the mercy rule.
The Crusaders, now 4-2, continued to rake in the second game, piling up 17 hits in the win. Jackson Maddix and Nate Astore each went 4 for 4 and drove in four runs to lead the way. Andruscik had two hits and drove in three runs while Olszewski had a pair of hits, including a home run, and drove in two.
Gerba, Brock and Wagner each had a hit and an RBI in the nightcap. On the mound, Gerba struck out four and walked one in his four-inning stint.
Sto-Rox 8, Beaver Falls 5
Jamarcus Pierce clubbed a home run and a double and drove in three runs to lead the way as the Vikings downed the Tigers in a Class 3A Section 1 matchup.
Marquise Thomas contributed a pair of hits and had two RBIs for the winners while Lamar Washington finished with two hits, drove in a run and scored a run.
Chris Bell scored twice, drove in a run and had one hit for Sto-Rox.
Pierce’s RBI double in the third inning trimmed the Vikings’ deficit to 2-1 and his solo home run in the fifth tied the game at 2-2.
Sto-Rox went ahead 3-2 in the sixth on Washington’s RBI double, and back-to-back bases-loaded walks to Bell and Pierce made it 5-2. Chase Burks was then hit by a pitch, forcing home the sixth Sto-Rox run, and Thomas followed with a two-run single to close out the scoring for the Vikings.
Pierce worked the first five innings and gave up just two hits and two runs, neither of which was earned. He struck out five and walked three.
BOYS VOLLEYBALL
Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 3, Montour 2
Brady Rooney registered 14 kills and Patrick Altmar contributed a dozen to help the Chargers pull out a thrilling five-set victory over the Spartans Tuesday night in a Class 2A Section 4 matchup.
OLSH prevailed by set scores of 23-25, 25-23, 25-15, 24-26 and 15-13.
Altmar also contributed six blocks and Rooney finished with three.
Isaac Tarbuk chipped in with 10 kills and Noah Wheeler had nine for OLSH, which also got 42 assists from Aidan Curry.
Dylan Huff led Montour with 10 kills and Brayden Vlasach added 22 digs for the Spartans.
BOYS TENNIS
North Allegheny blanked Moon Area, 5-0, Tuesday in a Class 3A Section 2 matchup. No further details were available.
GIRLS RUGBY
Moon Area 35, Lancaster 0
Ava Steed registered a pair of tries while Taylor Bradley, Shiri Kurdatullaev, Maya Miller and Jayla Rugani each contributed one to lead the Tigers past the defending state champion Knightmare in a game shortened by the mercy rule.
Kurdatullaev’s try came after Ella Arnold made a spectacular 70-meter run, working through several defenders.
Avery Merklin made good on five of six conversions for Moon.
