High school sports: Montour baseball whips Hopewell; Sto-Rox falls to Ellwood City

Matteo Weber smacked a pair of triples and drove in two runs and three Montour pitchers limited Hopewell to five hits in the Spartans’ 10-4 victory over the Vikings Friday in a WPIAL non-section baseball game at Montour.

Montour struck for three runs in the first, added single runs in the second and fourth innings and then broke the game open with a five runs in the fifth to turn a 5-4 lead into a 10-4 advantage.

Caleb Armbuster, Tommy Butts and Tyler Puffer contributed RBI singles in the first inning, and Montour led 4-0 after three innings. But Hopewell rallied for four runs in the fourth to tie the score at 4-4.

Montour took the lead for good in its half of the fourth inning when Zachary Ciamacco scored on Armbruster’s fly out to center that resulted in a double play. But the run scored before the final out was recorded.

Michael Ivanoff singled in a pair of runs in the fifth inning, Gavin Foley added an RBI bunt single and Weber drove in two more with one of his triples.

Weber and Butts finished with two hits apiece for Montour. Cyprian Slifkey, Nino DiMichele and Zander Stern combined to give up five hits and four runs – all earned – while walking five and striking out six in the win.

Ellwood City 8, Sto-Rox 2

Jacob Biskup had two hits and drove in four runs and Jordan Keller had two hits, including a solo homer, as the Wolverines downed the Vikings in a Class 3A Section 1 game.

Sto-Rox managed just four hits off three Ellwood City pitchers, with Marquise Thomas collecting two of them and Chase Burks and Jamarcus Pierce each finishing with one.

Ellwood City scored four times in the second inning on Gino Biondi’s RBI single and Biskup’s three-run double.

Sto-Rox averted the shutout by scoring twice in the seventh, with both runs coming on errors that followed Pierce’s base hit.
