High school sports: Montour, Bishop Canevin post baseball wins; Moon track dominates section meet

Matteo Weber allowed just one hit in six-plus innings and Zachary Ciamacco collected RBI singles in each of the first two innings to lift visiting Montour to a 3-0 victory over Gateway Monday in a Class 5A Section 4 baseball game.

Weber was perfect through the first four innings before Gateway’s Donovan Deluco reached on an infield error leading off the fifth inning.

Weber then retired the next three batters in succession to preserve his no-hitter for the time being.

Gateway’s Nicolai Comunale singled leading off the sixth but Weber once again retired the next three batters he faced, including the last two by strikeout.

Weber retired the first batter in the seventh before being relieved by Gavin Foley, who struck out the last two batters to preserve the shutout.

Ciamacco and Weber each finished with two hits for Montour while Michael Ivanoff contributed an RBI double in the first inning.


Bishop Canevin 7, Eden Christian Academy 4

Tyler Maddix’s delivered a two-run double in the fifth inning to help the Crusaders erase a 3-2 deficit and post a Class 1A Section 3 victory over the Warriors.

Eden Christian struck for three runs in the first inning before Bishop Canevin answered with a pair of runs in the fourth to slice the deficit to 3-2.

Brady Wagner singled in one run and Maddix scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-2.

In the fifth, Bishop Canevin used Aaryn Edwards’ single and two walks to load the bases. Maddix then came through with his two-run double to give the Crusaders a 4-3 lead. Jackson Maddix followed with another two-run double to make it 6-3.

Each team scored a run in the seventh.

Tyler Maddix finished with three hits and scored three runs while Jackson Maddix had two hits.

Tyler Maddix worked 5 2/3 innings, giving up six hits and three runs – two earned – while walking four and striking out seven.


Ellwood City 23, Sto-Rox 1

Jordan Keller banged out a pair of home runs, scored three times and drove in seven runs to spark the Wolverines past the Vikings in a Class 3A Section 1 game.

Cameron Mills drove in three runs for the winners while Gino Biondi, William Nardone and Matthew Kelley each contributed two RBIs.

AJ Crews managed the lone Sto-Rox hit.

Ellwood City scored three runs in the first inning, four in the second, five in the third and then put the game away with an 11-run fourth inning. The Wolverines finished with 15 hits.

SOFTBALL

Upper St. Clair 7, Montour 6

The Panthers rallied for three runs in the top of the sixth inning to erase a 6-4 deficit and held on to defeat the host Spartans in a Class 5A Section 3 game.

Montour jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, with Shania Cope contributing a two-run single. After the Panthers struck for two runs in their half of the second inning, Montour came back with a run in the bottom of the frame on Cope’s RBI single.

Upper St. Clair tied the score at 4-4 with two runs in the third inning, but Montour took a 6-4 lead in the bottom of the fourth on Emily McClean’s RBI single and a run-scoring fielder’s choice.

But the Panthers came back in the sixth to score three times to take the lead for good. Nora Stutzman’s RBI single tied the score at 6-6 and the go-ahead run scored on a passed ball.

Hailey Staub led Montour’s nine-hit attack with three hits and she scored twice. Cope and Natalie Ciamacco each finished with two hits.


West Allegheny 6, Moon Area 2

Ava Benish collected two hits and drove in three runs, two of which came on a second-inning single, and that proved to be the key hit in the Indians’ win over the Tigers in a Class 5A Section 3 game.

West Allegheny scored single runs in the first, sixth and seventh innings while Moon managed just a run in the first and one in the fifth.

Alicia McMahon had two of Moon’s six hits, including an RBI double in the first inning. She also reached on an error in the fifth that scored the Tigers’ other run.

Courtney Shuman and Katie DeMarco each had a hit and scored a run for Moon.


Sewickley Academy 13, Bishop Canevin 1

Gabby Edmunds had two hits, scored a pair of runs and drove in two to spark the Panthers to a Class 1A Section 1 win over the Crusaders.

Quincy Sirko scored three times and had a pair of hits for the winners, who scored three runs in the first and second innings, then added two in the third before tacking on five more in the fourth to put the game away.

Bishop Canevin finished with just four hits – one each from Macie McClain, Ava Washington, Bella Lane and Lizzy Fuchs.


Seton LaSalle 21, Carlynton 0

The Rebels brought out the heavy lumber, banging out a triple, four doubles and five singles to subdue the Cougars in a Class 2A Section 3 game.

Seton LaSalle erupted for 10 first-inning runs, added eight more in the second and three in the third to finish off Carlynton, which managed just one hit — a double by Sarah Loney in the second inning.


TRACK AND FIELD

Moon Area’s boys team went 6-0 at Monday’s WPIAL Class 3A Section 7 meet, while the Tigers girls team went 5-1, and both teams clinched berths in the WPIAL Team Semifinals, scheduled for April 29.

In the boys meet, Moon defeated Canon-McMillan 106-44, Chartiers Valley 119-31, West Allegheny 110-40, Montour 128-22, South Fayette 108-42 and Trinity 93-57.

In the girls meet, Moon lost only to South Fayette, 87-63. The Tigers defeated Canon-McMillan 98-52, Chartiers Valley 80-70, West Allegheny 86.5-63.5, Montour 100-50 and Trinity 125-25 to finish as the section runner-up.


FLAG FOOTBALL

Moon posted a 41-6 victory over West Allegheny in one game and then battled Seton LaSalle to a scoreless tie in the other. Reese Keslar led the way offensively in the win over West Allegheny and the defense played a solid game. The defense also rose to the occasion against Seton LaSalle, holding the Rebels scoreless in regulation and in overtime.


RUGBY

The Moon Area girls team posted a 25-0 victory over State College Sunday.

Teodora Bikowski, Maria Depner, Sam Orlando, Jayla Rugani, Melissa Staaf, Ava Steed and Keira Wise each scored two tries while Elena Bates, Laura Brosovic, Brenna Craig, Ellie McKinnon, Ellie Nurss and Maya Miller each added one.

Nurss made good on 5 of 9 conversions while Avery Merklin was 2 of 5, Orlando 1 of 2 and Bella Bryck 1 of 4.


GIRLS LACROSSE

Moon Area 13, Fox Chapel 7

Gianna DeLuca scored four goals and Marleigh Therrien and Avery Machusko each contributed three to pace the Tigers, who improved to 6-1.

Reese Keslar added four assists for Moon.
