High school sports: Moon softball falls to South Fayette; OLSH downs Carlynton

South Fayette jumped to a 6-0 lead after two innings and went on to defeat Moon Area, 8-4, Wednesday in a Class 5A Section 3 softball game at Moon.

Addie Vierra’s two-run single sparked a three-run first inning and Evie Vuono’s two-run homer was the key blow in the three-run second inning for South Fayette.

Vuono finished with three of the Lions’ 12 hits and drove in three runs.

Sydney Ray and Macy Trost each had two hits for Moon, which finished with eight hits. Trost tripled and scored on Abby Warnagiris’ sacrifice fly and Trost later singled home a run.


Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 18, Carlynton 1

Sophia Wasko had two hits and drove in three runs and Julia Pinter and Leann Walzer each contributed three RBIs as the Chargers downed the Cougars in a Class 2A Section 3 game.

OLSH scored four times in the first inning and then added seven runs in each of the next two innings of the three-inning contest.

The Chargers finished with 10 hits and took advantage of five walks and seven Carlynton errors.
Pinter contributed a two-run double in the third inning while Sydney Trippe, Claire Bulls, Lizzie Smith and Wasko each chipped in with RBI singles in the frame.

Wasko pitched all three innings for OLSH, giving up three hits and one earned run while striking out six.


West Allegheny 12, Montour 2

Alexis Santucci’s three-run homer keyed a four-run second inning rally as the Indians whipped the Spartans in a Class 5A Section 3 game.

Ava Henke went 3 for 3 and drove in two runs for West Allegheny, which out-hit Montour 12-6. Irena Santoro and Anna Henry each added two RBIs for the winners.

No one had more than one hit for Montour, which scored once in the first inning and once in the sixth.

Cayley Hughes singled home a run in the first inning and Danielle Terpack smacked a solo homer in the sixth for the Spartans.

BASEBALL

Bishop Canevin 11, Springdale 1

Tyler Maddix and Layne Gerba combined to limit the Dynamos to just two hits and the Crusaders used six extra-base hits to cruise to an easy win in a WPIAL non-section matchup at Springdale.

Jackson Maddix had one of the Crusaders’ five doubles, and his RBI single put Bishop Canevin on the board for the first time in the third inning. Tyler Maddix followed with an RBI double to make it 2-0.

The Crusaders added three more runs in the fourth inning, with Kole Olszeweski tripling home a run, and they broke the game open with a six-run fifth inning.

Aaryn Edwards started the scoring in that frame with an RBI double, Gerba added a run-scoring single and Jackson Maddix contributed a two-run double. Tyler Maddix’s RBI single ended the scoring for Bishop Canevin.

Olszewski finished with two hits and scored three times for the winners.

Tyler Maddix worked the first three innings on the mound and did not give up a hit. He walked three and struck out seven. Gerba went the final two innings and gave up two hits and a run, walking two and striking out four.


BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Hopewell 3, Montour 2

The Vikings dropped the first two games but then posted three straight wins to take the Class 2A Section 4 game at Montour Tuesday night, 24-26, 21-25, 25-19, 25-18, 18-16.

Dylan Huff led Montour with 12 kills and added two blocks. Wyatt Bucek registered 11 kills and six blocks while Gaige Schoff finished with 11 kills in the loss.


Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 3, Mars 0

Noah Wheeler racked up 16 kills to lead the Chargers past the Fightin’ Planets in a non-section match Wednesday night. Set scores were 25-16, 25-16, 25-21.

Patrick Altmar added five kills and two blocks while Isaac Tarbuk chipped in with four kills and a block. Tarbuk also had two aces while Aiden Curry contributed three.

Trinity 3, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 2

The Hillers dropped the first two sets but came back to post a reverse sweep of the Chargers, 19-25, 24-26, 25-16, 25-17, 15-7 in a Class 2A Section 4 match Tuesday night at Trinity.

Tarbuck and Wheeler each had nine kills and Altmar added eight. Altmar finished with 4.5 blocks while Wheeler added 3.5. Tarbuk registered with four aces and Brady Rooney added three.


WPIAL NEWS

Two West Hills high school athletic directors have been elected to serve on the WPIAL Board of Directors for the 2025-26 school year.

Alan Alcalde, the athletic director at Moon Area, and Nathan Milsom, who holds a similar position at Carlynton, both were elected to the board.

Ten athletic directors were elected to serve one-year terms.

In other WPIAL news, the league is mourning the loss of former executive director Lawrence (Larry) Hanley.

A 1959 graduate of Crafton High School, Hanley spent 16 years on the WPIAL Board of Directors, including six years as president and six years as vice president. In 1997, the board appointed Hanley executive director, and he served in that position until his retirement in 2006.

Hanley worked for 33 years in the Gateway School District and was instrumental in bringing several new sports to the school. He was inducted into the Gateway Sports Hall of Fame in 2001 and seven years later was inducted into the WPIAL Hall of Fame.
