High school sports: OLSH baseball sweeps Carlynton; Montour softball rolls to win

Chad Minton’s run-scoring single snapped a 1-1 tie in the sixth inning and propelled Our Lady of the Sacred Heart to a 5-1 victory over Carlynton Tuesday, finishing off a doubleheader sweep of the Cougars in Class 2A Section 3 baseball action at OLSH.

OLSH took the first game, 7-0, behind Iseia Fields-Schulz’s complete-game, three-hit shutout in which he struck out 13 batters.

Dean Douglass opened the decisive sixth-inning rally in the nightcap with a double for the Chargers, and he came around to score what proved to be the winning run on Minton’s single.

An error made it 3-1 and Anthony Hansen’s steal of home increased OLSH’s lead to 4-1. Fields-Schulz’s sacrifice fly closed the scoring for OLSH.

Sean Hudac worked the first six innings and limited Carlynton to three hits and a run, walking just one and striking out 10. Tyler Heinrich’s RBI single in the first inning was the only damage Hudac allowed.

OLSH managed just three hits of its own.

In the opener, the Chargers struck for four runs in the first inning and added single runs in each of the third, fourth and seventh innings.

Thomas Medwig had two hits and drove in a run for OLSH. Hansen scored twice, had one hit and drove in a run while Douglass and Minton each had a hit, scored a run and drove in a run. Hudac had a hit and an RBI for the Chargers, as did Colby Lane.

Hudac’s run-scoring fielder’s choice started the scoring in the first inning for OLSH. Minton stroked an RBI triple and Hansen singled him home to make it 3-0. Hansen then stole home to complete the four-run rally.

Douglass contributed his RBI single in the third to make it 5-0 and Medwig’s run-scoring single came in the fourth. Lane’s RBI double in the seventh closed the scoring.

Collecting hits for Carlynton were Dom Ciabattoni, Traivon Josey and Heinrich.

Connellsville 3, Montour 2

Grayden Gillott’s RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning gave the Falcons a win over the visiting Spartans in a Class 5A Section 4 game.

It was Connellsville’s second win over Montour in the last two days.

Connellsville took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on Matthew Firestone’s run-scoring fielder’s choice, and the Falcons made it 2-0 in the second when Gillott was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Montour pulled even in the seventh when Zander Stern singled, Dalton Young followed with an RBI double and Caleb Ambruster delivered a sacrifice fly.

The Falcons’ winning rally in the eighth started with one out when Jayden Mickens was hit by a pitch. Noah Zawislan’s base hit moved Mickens to third and another hit-by-pitch loaded the bases. Gillott then delivered his game-winning single.

Stern led Montour’s eight-hit attack with a pair of hits. Montour’s starting pitcher, Michael Ivanoff, worked five innings and gave up five hits and two runs, one of which was earned. He walked three and struck out seven.

Beaver Falls 11, Sto-Rox 1

The Tigers pushed across three runs in the first inning, and that proved to be all they needed to subdue the Vikings in a Class 3A Section 1 matchup at Beaver Falls.

Both teams finished with seven hits, but Beaver Falls took advantage of six Sto-Rox errors to win easily.

J. Pierce went 2 for 2 and drove in Sto-Rox’s lone run, which came in the fifth and final inning.

SOFTBALL

Montour 14, Ellwood City 4

Shania Cope collected three hits, scored three times and drove in four runs to spark the Spartans to a non-section win over the Wolverines.

Cope keyed a 10-run fifth-inning rally by stroking a pair of two-run doubles. Hailey Staub contributed a two-run single, Caylee Moser added an RBI double and Ava Bartel chipped in with a run-scoring fielder’s choice.

Ellwood City led 4-1 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning but Danielle Terpack closed the gap with a two-run homer for Montour.

Then in the fifth, the Spartans went on the attack, scoring 10 times. Cope’s two-run double put Montour in front 5-4, Moser added her RBI double, Staub stroked a two-run single and Cope delivered her second two-run double of the inning to make it 12-4.

Gabby McDowell went the distance on the mount for the Spartans, giving up eight hits and four runs – two earned – while walking six and striking out five.
