Iseia Fields-Schulz hurled 5 1/3 innings of one-hit ball in the opener and Gino Williams collected four hits and drove in six runs in the nightcap to help Our Lady of Sacred Heart post a doubleheader sweep of Brentwood, 5-0 and 12-3, Wednesday in Class 2A Section 3 baseball action.
Fields-Schulz walked four and struck out 14 in picking up the win in the first game, yielding only a leadoff single to Blaize Diaz in the fourth inning.
Sean Hudac had a pair of doubles and drove in two runs for the Chargers while Williams had a hit, scored twice and had an RBI for OLSH.
In the second game, the Chargers trailed 3-2 after three innings but rallied for five runs in the fourth inning and then put the game away with a four-run seventh-inning rally.
Fields-Schulz’ solo homer in the fourth tied the game at 3-3 for OLSH and Ryan DeNinno’s RBI single put the Chargers in front 4-3. Williams, Thomas Medwig and Hudac then followed with RBI doubles to make it 7-3.
Williams, who homered to lead off the game, added a run-scoring single in the sixth and cleared the bases with a three-run double in the seventh.
Medwig and Schulz each finished with three hits for OLSH while Hudac added two.
Eden Christian Academy 8, Bishop Canevin 2
Brady Hull collected three hits, including a home run, and drove in three runs to spark the Warriors past the Crusaders in a Class 1A Section 3 contest.
Eden Christian scored three runs in the third to snap a 1-1 tie and added three more in the fourth, and that proved to be enough to secure the win.
Noah Emswiler added three hits and scored two runs for the Warriors while Levi DeFazio had a hit and drove in three runs.
Kole Olszewski had two of Bishop Canevin’s five hits. Aaryn Edwards doubled and scored a run and Brady Wagner drove in a run for the Crusaders.
Seneca Valley 6, Moon Area 3
Mason Fisher scored on a passed ball in the top of the ninth inning to snap a 3-3 tie and lift the Raiders past the Tigers in a Class 5A non-section game.
Andrew Cross’ solo home run in the bottom of the eighth inning for Moon tied the game at 3-3 but Fisher broke the tie when he scooted home on a passed ball in the top of the ninth to make it 4-3.
Wes Conville followed with a two-run single and Moon went down in order in the bottom of the ninth.
Four Seneca Valley pitchers teamed to hold the Tigers to just three hits, with Cross picking up two of them. He also scored two of the Tigers’ three runs.
Montour 4, Gateway 1
The Spartans managed just two hits but pushed across four runs to down the Gators in a Class 5A Section 4 game.
Caleb Armbruster’s RBI double in the fourth inning snapped a 1-1 tie and that proved to be the game-winner for Montour.
The Spartans’ final two runs scored on a wild pitch and a bases-loaded hit by pitch.
Michael Ivanoff and Olliver Wovchko teamed to limit Gateway to three hits. Ivanoff worked the first four innings, yielding one hit and one unearned run while walking four and striking out seven.
Wovchko pitched the final three innings and gave up two hits and didn’t walk a batter while striking out seven.
SOFTBALL
Bishop Canevin 17, Rochester 4
Alexis Summers went 3 for 3, scored three times and drove in two and Macie McClain had two hits, collected three RBIs and scored three times to help lead the Crusaders past the Rams in a Class 1A Section 1 game.
Bishop Canevin scored nine times in the second inning to snap a 2-2 tie and added four runs in the third to win going away.
Lizzy Fuchs had two hits, scored three runs and drove in a pair for the winners. Bella Lane also contributed two hits, scored once and had an RBI for the Crusaders, who pounded out 13 hits and drew 12 walks in the win.
McClain went the distance on the mound, giving up three hits and four runs, one of which was earned. She walked four and struck out 14 in earning the win.
Carlynton 12, Fort Cherry 7
Carlee Hughes banged out two triples and single and Maura Weiland tallied three hits of her own to spark the Cougars past the Rangers in a Class 2A Section 3 contest.
Danica DeCecco and Sarah Loney added triples for Carlynton, which trailed 4-3 after one inning but erupted for six runs in the second inning to take the lead for good.
Hanalee Nordeen added two hits for Carlynton, which finished with 13 hits to nine for Fort Cherry.
Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 11, Seton LaSalle 4
Mya Eshenbaugh collected two hits and drove in four runs to spark the Chargers past the Rebels in a Class 2A Section 3 games.
Seton LaSalle built a 3-1 lead after three innings before OLSH put together a three-run rally in the fourth inning, then followed that with four runs in the fifth and three in the sixth while limiting the Rebels to a single run over the final five innings.
Eshenbaugh’s solo home run leading off the fourth inning brought the Chargers to within 3-2 and Camryn Hummel’s two-run single vaulted OLSH into a 4-3 lead.
In the fourth, Julia Pinter doubled home a run and Leann Walzer followed with a two-run double to give the Chargers plenty of breathing room.
OLSH finished with 16 hits and held Seton LaSalle to seven. Olivia DiGiacomo and Walzer each had three hits, with Walzer collecting three RBIs. Ava Ciummo, Kaylee Seskey and Hummel each added two hits while Hummel drove in three runs for the Chargers.
South Fayette 6, Montour 3
Maddie Cavenaugh had two hits and drove in two runs and Evie Vuono added a home run and two RBIs to spark the Lions past the Spartans in a Class 5A Section 3 matchup.
Cavenaugh’s two-run homer in the second inning snapped a 1-1 tie and Vuono’s two-run shot in the fifth inning gave South Fayette a 5-2 lead. That was as close as Montour would get the rest of the way.
Montour out-hit the Lions 9-8, with Shania Cope collecting three of those hits and driving in two of the Spartans’ three runs.
Emily McClean contributed two hits in the loss.
Chartiers Valley 10, Moon Area 1
Annabelle Helt collected three hits, drove in two runs and scored twice to spark the Colts past the Tigers in a Class 5A Section 3 contest.
Delaney O’Connor added two hits and two RBIs for Chartiers Valley, which scored three runs in the third and four more in the fourth to open a comfortable 8-0 lead.
Cameran Chambers and Macy Trost each had two hits for Moon, which was out-hit 12-6. Trost’s RBI single in the sixth inning accounted for the only Tigers run.
Sewickley Academy 15, Cornell 0
Quincy Sirko smacked a grand slam in the second inning and finished with three hits and six RBIs to pace the Panthers past the Raiders in a Class 1A Section 1 game.
Sewickley Academy piled up 15 hits to just one for Cornell – Katie Wegley’s first-inning single.
BOYS VOLLEYBALL
Hopewell 3, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 1
The Vikings prevailed in four sets, 25-14, 25-14, 23-25 and 25-18 Tuesday night. Isaac Tarbuk and Noah Wheeler each registered eight kills for the Chargers while Brady Rooney and Patrick Altmar each contributed six.
Altmar also had five blocks and Rooney had two.
Hopewell also won the junior varsity match in 2-0.
