Chad Minton’s run-scoring fielder’s choice in the bottom of the sixth inning proved to be the difference Tuesday in Our Lady of the Sacred Heart’s 6-5 victory over South Side in a WPIAL Class 2A Section 3 baseball game.
Thomas Medwig opened the sixth with a double a hit batsman put runners at first and second. Dean Douglass followed with a sacrifice, moving pinch runner Wyatt Walsh to third and Sean Hudac to second, and Walsh scored the go-ahead run on Minton’s ground out to second.
Hudac came on to pitch in the seventh and allowed the first batter to reach on a base hit. Hudac then struck out the next two batters and induced the final hitter to pop out to second to preserve the win.
Medwig and Anthony Hansen each finished with two hits for OLSH, which managed just five hits overall.
The Chargers scored four runs in the first inning to erase an early 1-0 deficit, loading the bases on a walk and two hit batsmen. An error allowed one run to score and three straight bases-loaded walks accounted for the other three runs in the inning.
South Side struck for four runs in its half of the third inning, and the Chargers tied the score at 5-5 on yet another bases-loaded walk.
Iseia Fields-Schulz worked the first six innings on the mound for OLSH, giving up five hits and one unearned run while walking two and striking out 12.
