Olivia DiGiacomo drove in three runs with a pair of singles in an 11-run first inning to spark Our Lady of the Sacred Heart to a 15-0 victory over Fort Cherry Thursday in a WPIAL Class 2A Section 3 softball game.
DiGiacomo started the scoring with an RBI base hit and then came back later in the same inning with a two-run single that extended OLSH’s lead to 7-0.
Kaylee Seskey also had two run-scoring singles in the opening frame for the Chargers. Also driving in first-inning runs for the Chargers were Mya Eshenbaugh, Leann Walzer, Sophia Wasko and Julia Pinter.
Ava Ciummo contributed two hits for OLSH, which finished the three-inning game with 12 hits.
Upper St. Clair 3, Moon Area 1
The Panthers built a 3-0 lead with a run in the second and two in the third and held the Tigers to a single run in the fourth on the way to a Class 5A Section 3 win at Moon.
Marissa Noschese singled home a run for Upper St. Clair’s first run and the two third-inning runs scored on Kenzie Pope’s RBI triple and an RBI single from Brooklyn Kemp.
Kendall Trexler’s RBI double accounted for Moon’s lone run.
The Tigers managed just six hits and no one had more than one. Katie DeMarco went the distance on the mound for Moon and gave up 10 hits and three runs while striking out six. She did not walk a batter.
Burgettstown 14, Carlynton 3
The Cougars came out swinging, scoring three runs on four hits in the opening inning, but they managed just one hit over the next four innings in a loss to the Blue Devils in a Class 2A Section 3 game.
Danica DeCecco had a pair of doubles to lead Carlynton. Sarah Loney also added a double while Ava Barber and Lucy Vetter each contributed a base hit.
Carlynton committed seven errors to aid the Burgettstown cause.
BASEBALL
Montour 8, Chartiers Valley 1
Zander Stern had two hits, including a three-run triple, and Michael Ivanoff added three hits and two RBIs to help the Spartans whip the Colts in a Class 5A Section 4 game.
Montour spotted the Colts a 1-0 lead in the first inning before answering with two runs in the bottom of the inning.
Ivanoff’s RBI single tied the score and Dalton Young stroked a run-scoring single to make it 2-1.
Montour led 3-1 after five innings but put the game away with a five-run sixth inning. Stern’s bases-clearing triple was the big blow for the Spartans.
Young finished with two hits for Montour, which out-hit Chartiers Valley 9-2.
Ivanoff pitched the first four innings, giving up a hit and a run while walking four and striking out six. Matteo Weber and Tommy Butts worked the last three innings and gave up just one hit.
New Brighton 11, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 8
The Lions erupted for five runs in the fifth inning to overcome a 7-3 deficit and went on to defeat the Chargers in a non-section contest.
Brock Budacki’s RBI double brought New Brighton to within three runs in the fifth and Jaleb Bailey’s two-run single made it 7-6. Aiden Circle followed with a run-scoring single to score a pair of runs and give the Lions the lead for good.
OLSH trailed 11-7 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning but scored a run on an error and had the bases loaded with no outs. But the Chargers were unable to score again.
Iseia Fields-Schulz doubled home a pair of runs to highlight a three-run third-inning rally for OLSH.
New Brighton jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning on a sacrifice fly and a pair of RBI singles. The Chargers got on the board in the second on a walk, a wild pitch, a passed ball and a fielder’s choice.
OLSH then rallied for three runs in the third inning. Sean Hudac drove in a run with a base hit and Fields-Schulz followed with his two-run double.
Thomas Medwig, Ryan DeNinno and Dean Douglass each had two hits for the Chargers.
Brashear 16, Sto-Rox 5
The Vikings scored four of their five runs without the benefit of a single hit but still fell short in this non-section battle with the Bulls.
Sto-Rox scored twice in the first inning on three walks, Marquise Thomas’ steal of home and a balk that brought home the second run.
The Vikings added two more runs in the fifth on a dropped third strike and a steal of home by JaMarcus Pierce.
Sto-Rox’s final run came in the seventh inning on an error, Pierce’s base hit and Thomas’ steal of home. Pierce’s single was the lone hit of the game for the Vikings.
Brashear pounded out 16 hits and took advantage of four Sto-Rox errors.
