Evan Thomas scored a pair of goals and Zach Balbach added one to propel unbeaten and top-seeded Moon to a 3-0 victory over Hampton Thursday in a quarterfinal match in the WPIAL Class 3A boys soccer tournament at Moon.
The win vaults the Tigers – now 20-0 – into a semifinal match against Bethel Park Monday. The site and time are to be determined.
Two of the Tigers’ goals came in the first half, and they added a third goal in the final period.
Assisting on goals were Aedan Costa and Luiz Silva, and William Guarino posted the clean sheet in goal.
In the Class 1A tournament, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart advanced Tuesday with a 2-1 victory over Springdale in a match that went to penalty kicks. The third-seeded Chargers won the penalty kick battle, 3-0.
OLSH will move on to play No. 7 seed Eden Christian Academy Tuesday, Oct. 29, in a semifinal match at a site and time to be determined.
In the girls 3A tournament, Moon fell 2-1 to Plum in double overtime Thursday. Keirstin Curry and Emily Grubich scored goals for Plum while Lauren Muhanna scored Moon’s lone goal off an assist from Madison Shaver.
The Tigers finished the season 13-4.
In another quarterfinal game Thursday, top-seeded Fox Chapel beat Montour, 7-1.
Girls Volleyball
In Class 2A tournament action Wednesday, Neshannock edged Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, 3-2, while Indiana swept Montour, 3-0, in the Class 3A tournament.
In Class 1A play, No. 2 seed Eden Christian Academy defeated No. 7 Bishop Canevin, 3-0, in the quarterfinals Thursday night.
Cross Country
Moon’s Alyson Stepp brought home the silver medal Thursday in the WPIAL cross country championships Thursday and punched her ticket to the PIAA state championship meet in Hershey Nov. 2.
Stepp clocked a time of 18 minutes, 0.10 seconds in helping the Tigers to an eighth-place team finish.
Also earning a berth in the state meet was Moon’s Elise Ashcroft, who finished 20th Thursday with a time of 19.16.80.
In the boys meet, Moon’s Tyler Giunipero finished third with a time of 15:40 and also earned a berth in the state meet. Moon’s boys team finished seventh.
