High school swimming: Moon boys, girls capture MAC meet titles

It’s getting to be a habit for the Moon Area boys and girls swim teams.

For the third year in a row, the Tigers took top honors among boys teams at the annual Midwestern Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving championships, held Friday and Saturday at Moon.

The Moon girls team also led the way in their meet, outdistancing 12 other schools to take the title for the for the second straight year and fourth time in the last six years.

The Moon boys, who have won five of the last six MAC meets, finished with 382 points, leaving second-place Quaker Valley in their wake with 264 points. The Tigers girls team totaled 360 points to runner-up Quaker Valley’s 285.

Three other West Hills area teams took part in the meet, which included 13 schools in all. On the boys side, Montour finished fourth with 243 points, Cornell was eighth with 120 and Carlynton was ninth with 117. A total of 13 schools were represented.

On the girls side, Montour placed ninth with 99 points, Cornell was 10th at 79 and Carlynton 11th with 69.5.

For the Moon boys, Isaac Tennant had quite a day, winning two individual events and swimming on two victorious relay teams.

Moon’s Madison Puthoff had a similar showing in the girls meet, taking two individual first-place finishes and helping two relay teams to top finishes.

Tennant won the 200-yard freestyle and the 500 free, and also teamed with Daniel Sirbu, Garrett Rash and Chris Bailey to take the 200 medley relay event.

Tennant also swam with Sirbu, Bailey and Troy Hickman on a unit that won the 400 freestyle relay.

Sirbu finished third in two individual events – the 200 IM and the 100 backstroke, while Bailey placed second in the 100 free and third in the 50 free.

Rash placed third in the 100 breaststroke and fifth in the 200 IM while Hickman wound up fourth in the 500 free and fifth in the 100 backstroke.

Moon’s Damien McGill wound up second in the 1-meter diving competition and Daniel Restaneo placed third.

Also for Moon, Evan Slawuta finished sixth in the 500 free and seventh in the 200 free while Brayden Freund placed seventh in the 100 butterfly.

Carlynton’s 200 medley relay quartet of Dominic Hixenbaugh, Graham Harman, Dom Pelescak and Fionn Hites posed a WPIAL qualifying time, and Harry Miller dropped 11 seconds in the 500 free.

On the girls side, Moon’s Puthoff won the 200 free and 500 free events and also teamed with Elli Patterson, Addi Munnell and Mimi Munnell to win both the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relay events.

Mimi Munnell finished second in the 200 IM and third in the 100 free while Addi Munnell wound up second in the 100 butterfly and fourth in the 100 backstroke.

Patterson placed second in the 100 backstroke and sixth in the 50 free.

Moon’s 200 freestyle relay team of Isabella Foley, Anya Muralidharan, Gabby Donnelly and Elaine Goosen finished second in the 200 freestyle relay.

Muralidharan finished third in the 100 breaststroke, posting a WPIAL qualifying time in the process, and fifth in the 50 free. Moon’s Melina Tolliver-Lehman was fourth in the 100 free and Ria Schwartz placed fifth in the 1-meter diving.

In the boys meet, Cornell’s Noah Pickett had a solid day, finishing second in two events – the 200 free and the 100 butterfly.

Montour’s Joseph Stahurski wound up fourth in the 100 butterfly and fifth in the 200 free.

On the girls side, Montour’s Anastasia Ulintz had an outstanding day, winning the 200 IM, placing third in the 500 free and helping the Spartans’ 400 freestyle relay team finish second.

Also swimming on that quartet were Alana Tonkin, Julia Trevenen and Caitlyn Dettling.

Dettling had two top-five finishes, placing fourth in the 200 free and fifth in the 500 free.

Montour’s 200 freestyle relay team of Tonkin, Dettling, Trevenen and Madilyn Apolito placed fourth. Tonkin also wound up fifth in the 100 backstroke, and Apolito placed fifth in the 200 free.

Cornell’s Mimi Chamberlain excelled by winning the 100 breaststroke event and placing third in the 200 IM. Chamberlain also teamed with Grace Turko, Kendra Durec and Gianna Mosca to place fifth in the 200 medley relay. Cornell’s Mira Mosca placed eighth in the 200 free.

Carlynton freshman Evey Fahnestock also fared well, placing second in the 100 breaststroke, where she broke Natali Lutsiv’s school record by 2.17 seconds. Fahnestock also placed fourth in the 200 IM and helped two relay teams to top-five finishes.

Fahnestock was joined by Allie Glass, Cate Hites and Mallory Rose on the 200 medley relay unit that placed fourth, and she teamed with Rose, Glass and Chloe Baum to place fifth in the 200 freestyle relay with a WPIAL qualifying time. Rose also wound up seventh in the 50 free while Hites dropped 1.32 seconds in the 100 butterfly.
