High school wrestling: Moon Area’s Smarsh takes home gold at North Allegheny Invitational

Moon Area’s Haley Smarsh delivered a dominant performance at Saturday’s North Allegheny Girls Wrestling Invitational, powering her way to the 130-pound championship with a series of decisive falls.

Entering the tournament as the No. 1 seed, Smarsh received a bye into the round of 16 and wasted little time asserting control once she stepped onto the mat.

Smarsh opened her run by pinning Saegerstown’s Hannah Beck in just 26 seconds, setting the tone for the day. The momentum carried into the quarterfinals, where she recorded another quick fall, this time over Derry’s Maizy Mikeska in 45 seconds.

In the semifinals, Smarsh faced a tougher test against Upper St. Clair’s Sydney Laboon but secured the fall at the 1:51 mark to advance to the finals.

In the championship bout, Smarsh capped her tournament by pinning Plum’s Saphia Davis at 3:24 to claim the title.

Smarsh defeated Davis in last year’s WPIAL Championship finals, posting a 12-1 major decision to take home the gold. Smarsh went on to place sixth in the PIAA Tournament after being forced to medical default her final two matches due to injury.
