Five West Hills area wrestlers will take No. 1 seeds onto the mat Saturday when they battle in the WPIAL Class 3A Southern Section meet at South Fayette High School in McDonald.
Moon Area boasts three top seeds in Cael Yanek at 133 pounds, Liam Costa (172) and Michael Olszewski (189). The other two No. 1 seeds hail from Montour in Jacob Chacon (145) and Rook Smith (152).
The top six finishers in each weight class from the Class 3A Southern Section meet will advance to the WPIAL Tournament, set for Feb. 20-21 at Canon-McMillan High School.
In the Class 2A Northern Section meet, set to begin at 9:30 a.m. at Keystone Oaks High School, Carlynton’s Dom Cisneros Torres is seeded No. 4 at 189 and Thomas Gargis is seeded fifth at 152.
There are no section tournaments for girls wrestling; the WPIAL girls championships will take place Feb. 21 at Mt. Lebanon. Montour’s Kristen Walzer and Moon’s Haley Smarsh are defending WPIAL champions.
On the Class 3A boys side, Yanek and Costa both have 100 career victories under their respective belts, with Yanek reaching the century mark at the Powerade tournament over Christmas break and Costa eclipsing that barrier at the Allegheny County Tournament earlier this year.
Olszewski, a senior, is 34-4, and will join his teammates in the 100-win circle if he can register three victories Saturday.
Yanek, a senior who is 31-6 on the season, will graduate with the most wins in school history. Costa, 35-6 this year, still has another year to pile up the wins.
Chacon, a senior, is 34-3 while fellow Spartan Smith is 27-4 in his final year of competition.
Both Chacon and Smith also own 100 career wins; Chacon notched No. 100 last weekend while Smith earned his 100th win earlier this season.
Other Moon wrestlers seeded among the top five in their weight classes are Karsten Kirchner, No. 3 at 121; Zack Regotti, No. 3 at 145; Bryce Thomas, No. 4 at 107; Hayden Seymour, No. 4 at 114; and Khalil Razipour, No. 4 at 215.
Montour has two other wrestlers seeded among the top five in No. 4 Damon Nelson at 121 and Jacob Halbedl, seeded fifth at 285.
Other Moon wrestlers competing in the Class 3A Southern Section meet are Landon Lower (127), Brayden Tooch (139), Abdul Tabee (152), Max Gould (160) and Zion Crew (285).
Other Montour wrestlers scheduled to wrestle Saturday are Parker Sedlock (114), Reese Lugaila (127), Ethan Chacon (139), Tom Cunningham (160), Jackson Kraemer (172), Andrew Cisneros (189) and Lucus Jenkins (215).
