High school wrestling: Yanek captures gold; Moon Area places fifth at Allegheny championships

Moon Area’s Cael Yanek captured first place in the 133-pound weight class Saturday to help the Tigers to a fifth-place finish at the Allegheny County Wrestling Championships, held Friday and Saturday at Fox Chapel High School.

Thomas Jefferson won the tournament with 292.5 points. Montour finished 21st with 83.5 points and Carlynton wound up 23rd with 72 points. A total of 37 schools took part in the tournament.

Yanek decisioned Seth Miller of Bethel Park, 7-0, in the championship finals after edging Gus Stedeford of North Allegheny, 4-2, in the semifinals and blanking Logan Connolly of Chartiers Valley, 4-0, in the quarterfinals.

Two Moon wrestlers placed fourth. At 107 pounds, Bryce Thomas was pinned by Thomas Jefferson’s Zach Rehak at 4 minutes, 58 seconds in the third-place match. Thomas decisioned Bennett Ferraro of Pine Richland, 6-4, in the consolation semifinals after falling 6-5 to Javeon Chambers of Highlands, 6-5, in the championship semifinals.

At 145, Elijah Thomas was pinned by Ethan Higgins of Bethel Park 40 seconds into their third-place match. Elijah Thomas won by forfeit over Brashear’s Elijah Elser in the consolation semifinals after he was pinned by Zach Schmitt of Allderdice at 4:33 of their consolation round 5 match.

For Montour, Jacob Chacon finished sixth and Jacob Halbedl wound up eighth.

Chacon, competing at 139, lost a 9-0 major decision to Aiden Burford of Highlands in the battle for fifth place. Chacon earlier pinned Luke Pawlowski of Gateway in consolation round 5.

Halbedl, wrestling at 285, lost 4-1 to D’Angelo Hamilton of Fox Chapel in the seventh-place match. Halbedl pinned Evan Hunkele of Hampton at 1:46 in consolation round 4.

For Carlynton, Braiden Sudor came away with a third-place finish at 215 and Henry Barbisch reached the championship finals at 285, only to fall to Sheppard Turk of Thomas Jefferson, 11-0.

Sudor decisioned Hunter Goelz of Bethel Park, 3-2, in the third-place match. Sudor pinned Trevor Cignetti of Shaler at 2:43 of their consolation semifinal match.

Barbisch reached the finals by pinning Ben Lloyd of Mt. Lebanon at 2:43 of the championship quarterfinals and stopping Michael Gibson of Bethel Park at 1:01 in the semifinals.
