High schools: Carlynton boys, girls claim soccer victories

Ali Al Masri’s second goal of the game proved to be the difference Thursday as Carlynton pulled out a wild 6-5 victory over visiting Bethlehem-Center in a WPIAL Class 1A Section 2 boys soccer game.

Miyando Lewis scored three goals to lead the Cougars, who built a 3-1 lead at halftime but saw the Bulldogs score four of the next five goals to go on top 5-4 with about 10 minutes to play in the game.

But Carlynton scored the equalizer and Al Masri snapped the tie with a goal with six minutes to go in the game.

The Cougars improved to 3-2-1 overall and 2-2-0 in section play.

Bishop Canevin 9, California 0

Adam Mkandama registered a hat trick and Joshua Burkes added two goals to spark the Crusaders to a shutout win over the Trojans in a Class 1A Section 2 game played at Youthtowne.

Domanic Hixenbaugh, Cooper Evans, Max Huet and Mahki Craig each contributed a goal for Bishop Canevin, which improved to 4-2 overall and 3-2 in section play.

Beaver County Christian School 1, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 0

The Eagles pushed across a first-half goal and made it stand up in a Class 1A Section 1 matchup with the visiting Chargers.

Jack Dewhirst finished with five saves in goal for OLSH, which fell to 4-4 overall and 3-1 in section play.

Pine-Richland 4, Moon Area 0

The Rams scored two goals within a two-minute span in each half to nail down a Class 4A Section 3 victory over the visiting Tigers.

Pine-Richland scored its first goal 10 minutes into the game and then added a second goal on a penalty kick two minutes later. The Rams scored their third goal with 20 minutes to play and added a final tally two minutes later

Moon dropped to 3-4-1 overall and 1-2 in section play with the loss.

Chartiers Valley 3, Montour 0

The Colts blanked the Spartans in a Class 3A Section 4 contest at Chartiers Valley. The loss left Montour 0-5 overall and 0-3 in the section.


GIRLS SOCCER

Carlynton 11, Serra Catholic 2

Bella D’Antonio collected four goals – all in the first half — and added an assist to lead the Cougars to a Class 1A Section 3 victory over the Eagles.

Gigi Choate tallied two goals and two assists for Carlynton, which improved to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in section play.

Mary Crawford and Riley Mauro each had a goal and an assist while Briar Vetter, Anita O’Leary and Mariah Freeman each contributed one goal for the Cougars.

Carlynton led 9-2 at the half, with Choate scoring both her goals and Mauro, Crawford and Vetter adding their goals along with D’Antonio’s four tallies.


BOYS GOLF

Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 214, Burgettstown 226

Matthew Prince came away with medalist honors in powering the Chargers past the Blue Devils in a Class 2A Section 4 match at Ponderosa Golf Club.

Ryan DeNinno shot 39 for OLSH, followed by Nolan Meyer (41), Garrett Carlowski (45), Will Feldues (52) and Katie Suess (53).

The Chargers improved to 8-3 overall and 4-1 in section play with the win.

Moon Area 192, Upper St. Clair 204

Matthew Koch posted the top score among all golfers in leading the Tigers past the Panthers in a Class 3A Section 6 match at Montour Heights Country Club.

Clayton Foster backed Koch up with a score of 38, followed by Brody Faulk (39) and Ian Bonidie and Patrick Queen, both of whom shot 40. Moon improved to 7-1 overall and 5-1 in section play.

Brooks York led USC by shooting 39.


GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Bishop Canevin 3, Cornell 0

Ava Washington collected 14 aces to lead the host Crusaders to a sweep of the Raiders in a Class 1A Section 1 match, winning by set scores of 25-10, 25-13, 25-12.

Washington’s 14 aces gave her a total of 38 on the season for Bishop Canevin.

Cornell fell to 2-5 overall and 0-4 in section play.

Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 3, Bentworth 1

The Chargers dropped the first set to the host Bearcats, 25-21, but then rallied to win the next three sets in a row, 25-15, 25-13, 25-15 in a Class 2A Section 3 match at Bentworth.

Bella Coladonato led OLSH with 13 kills and five digs, and Carmella Rippole totaled 27 assists. Also contributing to the Chargers’ win were Isabell Rodgers (nine assists), Frankie Schlatterer (10 kills, three blocks), Malley Woynar (nine kills, two blocks), Sophia Wasko (four aces, 13 digs), Fiona Shipley (six aces, five digs), Elin Gabor (three aces, six digs) and Addy Batts with 9 kills and 2 blocks.

North Catholic 3, Moon Area 0

The Trojans swept the Tigers, 25-16, 25-10, 25-17, in a Class 5A Section 3 match at North Catholic.

Ellie Carothers had five kills and two blocks for Moon and Maddie DeSantis contributed 13 digs for Moon,

Other games

South Park defeated visiting Carlynton, 3-0, in a Class 3A Section 3 match.

Host Fort Cherry swept Sto-Rox, 3-0, in a Class 2A Section 3 match.
