High schools: Sto-Rox boys end losing streak with win over Carlynton; Moon wrestlers eliminated

The Sto-Rox boys basketball team hadn’t been able to get in the gym since Friday because of the massive storm that brought things to a near standstill, but that didn’t seem to hurt the Vikings Wednesday night.

Adam Thomas led three players in double figures with 18 points, sparking Sto-Rox to an 80-50 victory over Carlynton in a WPIAL Class 3A Section 2 game at Carlynton.

Thomas, a 5-foot-9 sophomore guard, connected on five 3-pointers to help the Vikings snap an eight-game losing streak and improve to 7-12 overall and 3-4 in section play.

Sto-Rox coach Ryan Hughes said the time away from the gym served as a bit of a reset for his team, which hadn’t won since beating Washington, 54-45, on Jan. 6.

“It felt like we came out with better energy,” Hughes said of his team’s effort Wednesday night against Carlynton.

“We still had some sloppy spurts, which is understandable from a lack of playing or practicing. But after that losing streak, it was good to see smiles on the kids’ faces.

“They needed it. Hopefully that catapults us into these next three games with confidence.”

Sto-Rox’s fast start resulted in a 23-17 lead after one quarter, as Thomas drained three 3-pointers and finished with 12 points in the opening eight minutes.

Carlynton’s Ishaga Barrie, meanwhile, kept his team in the game with 10 points in that opening quarter.

The second quarter proved pivotal as the Vikings once again hit for 23 points but this time held Carlynton to just six, good for a 46-23 halftime lead. Delaun Harris scored six of his 11 points in the second quarter for Sto-Rox.

The two teams battled on even terms in the third quarter before Sto-Rox finished the game with a 13-6 edge in the final quarter.

LJ Washington added 17 points for Sto-Rox, which currently holds down a playoff spot with three section games remaining.

Barrie finished with 21 points for Carlynton, which dropped to 5-13 overall and 1-6 in the section.

Moon’s Cael Yanek won by technical fall over Ethan Koett, 19-3, at 133 pounds and Khalil Razipour decisioned Thomas Jefferson’s Deacon Kamberis, 6-0, at 285.
