Quarterback Trey Hopper threw for a whopping 436 yards and four touchdowns, and Daniel Batch and AJ Alston each scored twice to power Montour to a 44-14 nonconference victory over Knoch Friday night, Sept. 13, at Thomas J. Birko Memorial Stadium.

Montour, which overcame an early 7-6 deficit, rolled up an eye-popping 667 yards of total offense to improve to 3-0 with the win. Knoch fell to 1-2.

In other games involving West Hills area teams, Moon came back from a 24-6 deficit to beat West Allegheny, 32-24; Cornell remained unbeat by blitzing Burgettsown, 42-0; Bishop Canevin thumped Laurel, 48-23; Carlynton whipped Apollo-Ridge, 42-15; South Allegheny topped Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, 23-7, and Sto-Rox lost to Keystone Oaks, 24-8.

Montour 44, Knoch 14

In the Montour-Knoch matchup, Hopper and Batch put the Spartans on the board with a little less than 3 minutes to play in the opening quarter when they connected on a 70-yard touchdown pass.

But Knoch answered with less than a minute to play in the quarter when Colt Sprankle hit Kaden Spencer on a 24-yard touchdown. Kannon Trofimuk’s PAT gave the Knights the only lead they would enjoy on the night – and it wouldn’t last long.

After Batch returned the ensuing kickoff 35 yards to the Knoch 35-yard line, Caden Halajcio ran twice for 20 yards, and Batch scored on a 19-yard run. Brayden Davis’s PAT put Montour in front 13-7, and the Spartans would never trail again.

Hopper later connected twice with Alston on touchdown passes of 25 and 66 yards, and Hopper also teamed with James Bundridge on a 73-yard touchdown pass.

Halajcio capped the scoring for Montour with a 4-yard touchdown run with a little over 2 minutes to play in the third quarter, making the score 44-14.

Montour outgained the visitors 667-194, with Hopper accounting for a large chunk of that. Alston was his leading target on the night, hauling in seven passes for 190 yards. Batch had two catches for 129 yards.

Halajcio rushed for 114 yards on 19 carries for the Spartans, who held Knoch to just 17 net yards rushing.

Moon 32, West Allegheny 24

The host Tigers (2-1) roared from behind, scoring the game’s final three touchdowns to edge the Indians.

Tavis Lindsay’s 18-yard touchdown run proved to be the difference, as it erased a 24-19 deficit and gave Moon the lead for good with about 4 minutes to play in the game.

Lindsay then came up big on the next possession, as he intercepted a West Allegheny pass at the Indians’ 35-yard yard, and that set up Paul Bronaugh’s 15-yard touchdown run, which made it 32-24.

Cole Konieczka’s interception in the final minutes sealed the win for Moon.

West Allegheny built a 10-0 lead on Brody Malatak’s 30-yard touchdown pass to Brodie Cornell, and Kayden Tomei’s 31-yard field goal.

But Kyden Kulvanish’s 5-yard touchdown run pulled Moon within four at 10-6, and that closed the scoring in the first half.

West Allegheny lengthened its lead in the third quarter on Mason Police’s 1-yard run and Cornell’s 6-yard scoring burst, which gave West Allegheny a 24-6 lead with 7 minutes to play in the third quarter.

Bronaugh’s 5-yard touchdown run with 2 minutes, 46 seconds left in the third quarter brought Moon to within 24-12.

The Tigers pulled closer in the final minutes of the third quarter when Andrew Cross hit Nick Prezoli on a 45-yard touchdown pass after Moon forced a West Allegheny punt.

Cornell 42, Burgettstown 0

Khylil Johnson pulled off a hat trick of sorts, scoring three different ways – a 60-yard run, an 85-yard punt return and a 70-yard pass reception – as the Raiders (4-0) overpowered the Blue Devils (1-2).

Mark Stuckey completed 10 of 13 passes for 155 yards and two touchdowns, and his 70-yard connection with Johnson got Cornell off and running in the first quarter.

Stuckey followed with a 2-yard scoring run, and Johnson tacked on his 60-yard touchdown run to end the first-quarter scoring at 21-0.

Walter Clarit, who rushed for 115 yards, scored the only second-quarter touchdown for Cornell on a 1-yard run, giving the Raiders a 28-0 halftime lead.

Johnson’s long punt return for a touchdown made it 35-0 in the third quarter and Stuckey’s 13-yard touchdown pass to Mikey Keyes later in the quarter ended the scoring for the Raiders.

Cornell outgained Burgettstown 348-86.

In addition to his three scores, Johnson rushed four times for 68 yards and caught three passes for 87 yards. Clarit finished with 115 yards rushing in 11 attempts.

Luc Phillistine added a 25-yard field goal and converted all three extra points for Keystone Oaks, which led 10-0 at halftime.
