Camryn Kaufman scored a game-high 14 points and Moon Area used a fast start in a 53-27 victory over New Castle Monday night in a WPIAL Class 5A Section 3 girls basketball game at New Castle.
The Tigers, who improved to 6-8 overall and 2-4 in section play with the win, built a 20-5 first-quarter lead, partly on the strength of Kaufman’s seven points.
Moon led 27-10 at halftime and 41-18 heading into the final eight minutes.
Adriana D’Alesio added 10 points for the Tigers. Ka’Mya Thompkins’ 11 points led New Castle.
Beaver Falls 46, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 42
Dravean Haskins and Zakiyah Slade combined for 26 points and the Tigers took advantage of a major disparity in free-throw attempts to come from behind and defeat the Chargers in a key Class 3A Section 1 matchup at Beaver Falls.
Beaver Falls went to the free-throw line 25 times and converted 16 while OLSH had 11 attempts and made seven of them. The Tigers hit 13 of their first 15 and then went 3-for-10 in the final quarter.
In a contest that was tight throughout, OLSH led 11-10 after one quarter and after the teams were deadlocked at 24-24 at intermission, the Chargers took a one-point lead into the final eight minutes at 38-37.
But the Tigers, ranked No. 3 in Class 3A by TribLive, outscored OLSH 9-4 in that last quarter and took the lead for good with 2 minutes to play to remain unbeaten on the season at 15-0 overall and 10-0 in section play.
OLSH, ranked No. 4, fell into third place in section play at 6-3 and dropped to 12-5 overall. Quaker Valley’s win over Sto-Rox enabled the Quakers to improve to 7-2 in section play, good for second place.
Lola Garner led OLSH with 16 points.
Quaker Valley 57, Sto-Rox 24
Mimi Thiero scored 31 points and the No. 5-ranked Quakers went on a 21-0 run during the first 51/2 minutes of the second quarter to take control in a Class 3A Section 1 matchup against the host Vikings.
Quaker Valley led 14-6 after the first quarter, but a 21-0 run increased the Quakers’ lead to 35-6 before Brooklynn Sykes snapped the skid with a free throw with 2 minutes, 26 seconds remaining in the first half.
Kamiyah Thompson scored nine points to lead Sto-Rox, which fell to 6-8 overall and 3-6 in league play.
Serra Catholic 62, Bishop Canevin 36
The Eagles sprinted to a 27-4 first-quarter lead and that was all they needed to down the host Crusaders in a Class 1A Section 2 game.
Bella Dumbroski poured in 30 points for Serra Catholic, which went on to lead 40-17 at halftime and 50-21 heading into the final quarter.
Lexi Pearce backed up Dumbroski with 12 points.
Isabella Sysak scored 14 points for Bishop Canevin, which dropped to 6-9 overall and 5-4 in league play, and Kya Cooley contributed 12.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Hopewell 80, Sto-Rox 67
James Armstrong led five players in double figures with 21 points as Class 4A Hopewell downed Class 3A Sto-Rox in a nonsection game at Hopewell.
Brody Rock added 18 points for Hopewell, including eight in the fourth quarter when the host Vikings converted seven of 10 free-throw attempts.
Justin Shegog contributed 11 points for Hopewell while Jack Biega and Avery Bokor each added 10.
Sto-Rox, which trailed 37-33 at halftime, was outscored 24-16 in the third quarter, and that proved to be the difference.
Marcus Griffin led Sto-Rox with 20 points and L.J. Washington added 20 for the Vikings, who fell to 6-8 overall.
GIRLS WRESTLING
Sharpsville Tournament
Moon Area’s Haley Smart strung together three straight pins to take home the gold in the 130-pound weight class at the Battle Against Breast Cancer Tournament Saturday at Sharpsville High School.
Smarsh opened her day by pinning Avery Smiley of Mohawk in just 16 seconds and came back to stop Marissa Tanner of Hickory in 1:07.
In the championship match, Smarsh pinned Samara Larson of Hempfield Area.
The Tigers wound up 20th as a team among 30 schools.
