HS roundup: Moon’s Smarsh takes home gold at Powerade wrestling tournament

Moon Area’s Haley Smarsh took home the gold in the 130-pound weight class at the Girls Powerade Wrestling Tournament at Canon-McMillan High School over the weekend.

Smarsh, the No. 2 seed in her weight class at the national-level tournament, went 4-0 over the two days with three falls and one decision.

Smarsh opened by pinning Sadie Magness of Redbank Valley in just 16 seconds, then followed by stopping Erin Talmadge of Nativity BVM in the quarterfinals in 1 minute even.

That put Smarsh in the semifinals, where she stopped Kate Crockett of Oakton High School of Vienna, Va., in 1:43.

In the finals, Smarsh posted a 12-8 decision over Caroline Hilton, of Cleveland, Tenn.


GIRLS BASKETBALL

CalU Holiday Tournament

Our Lady of the Sacred Heart’s girls basketball team will look to finish off a sweep of its two-game set at the CalU Holiday Tournament at 7 p.m. Monday against Brownsville.

The Chargers opened tournament play with a 43-33 victory over Mercyhurst Prep Sunday night behind Lola Garner’s 16 points.

Maci Trombetta added 11 for OLSH, which led by just two at halftime, 17-15, but slowly pulled away in the second half to improve to 7-2 overall.


BOYS BASKETBALL

South Park 60, Carlynton 31

Luke Scarff scored a game-high 22 points and the Eagles built a 38-11 halftime lead on the way to a win over the Cougars Saturday night.

Scarff scored 11 of his 22 points in the first quarter as South Park led 18-8. Cooper Hochendoner added 16 for the Eagles.

Dewayne Fisher scored 10 points for Carlynton, which fell to 3-6.
