Rowan Winter led a balanced attack with 14 points to help Our Lady of the Sacred Heart post a 55-35 victory over Riverside Monday night in a WPIAL Class 3A Section 1 girls basketball game at OLSH’s Angela Activities Center.
Monday night’s game marked the return of OLSH’s Sara Dasechner, a two-year starter who had been rehabbing from a torn ACL she sustained in last March’s PIAA playoff win over Greensburg Central Catholic.
The Chargers stormed to a 20-6 lead in the first quarter, with Winter and Lola Garner combining for 11 points, and maintained a 26-17 lead at halftime.
OLSH outscored the visitors 14-9 in the third quarter and that sealed the victory.
Leah Parker scored 13 points for the Chargers, who improved to 9-3 overall and 3-2 in section play. Garner added 11 points and Shae Trombetta 10 for OLSH.
Gabby McElwain was Riverside’s top scorer with 12 points.
West Allegheny 66, Montour 53
Emma Ruperto led all scorers with 22 points and the Indians used a big second quarter to build a sizable lead on the way to a Class 5A Section 3 win over the host Spartans.
Montour, which fell to 10-3 overall and 2-3 in section play, trailed just 22-20 at the end of a high-scoring first quarter.
But West Allegheny, which also got 16 points from Ella Smith and 11 from Sky Gubba, outscored the Spartans 21-5 in the second quarter to lead 43-25 at halftime.
Montour trimmed the deficit to 53-43 heading into the final quarter but the Indians held on for the win.
Claire Bannon’s 17 points led Montour, which also got 16 from Tiffany Miller and 12 from Sofia Brandy.
Mars 32, Moon Area 23
Alexis Cashdollar scored a game-high 17 points as the Fightin’ Planets defeated the Tigers in a low-scoring Class 5A Section 3 contest at Mars.
Moon, which was led by Maria Depner’s 13 points, managed just four points in the first quarter and three in each of the third and fourth quarters in falling to 4-7 overall and 1-3 in section play.
Mars led 11-4 after one quarter but the Tigers outscored the host team 13-8 in the second quarter to trim the deficit to 19-17 at halftime. But Mars held Moon to just six in the final half to secure the win.
West Greene 60, Bishop Canevin 41
Kendra Tharp led three players in double figures with 16 points and the visiting Pioneers pulled away in the final two quarters to beat the Crusaders in a WPIAL Class 1A Section 2 game.
Bishop Canevin led 11-10 after one quarter and trailed by just three at halftime, 28-25.
The Crusaders, led by Isabella Sysak’s 19 points, battled hard and got within two points midway through the third period, but faded during the final 12 minutes of the half.
Jillisa Yecher added 14 points and Madelyn Roberts 13 for West Greene. Kya Cooley contributed 15 for Bishop Canevin, which fell to 3-7 overall and 2-3 in section play.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Moon Area 66, Mars 39
Jackson Bauman totaled 16 points and the Tigers outscored the host Fightin’ Planets 35-16 in the middle two quarters to take control in a Class 5A Section 4 game.
Moon, which improved to 8-2 overall and evened its section record at 2-2, led 19-14 after one quarter but used a 17-8 advantage in the second quarter to lead 36-22 at halftime.
The Tigers, who also got 12 points from Caden Kopay, added to that by outscoring Mars 18-8 in the third quarter.
Ben Detisch and Sam Miller each scored 11 points for Mars, which fell to 6-6 overall and 3-1 in section play.
Sto-Rox 67, Ellwood City 53
L.J. Washington scored 13 of his 19 points in the second half to help the Vikings pull away and defeat the Wolverines in a nonsection contest at Ellwood City.
M.J. Thomas scored 15 points and Delaun Harris added 13 for the Vikings, who built a 25-22 halftime lead, thanks in part to Harris’ seven second-quarter points.
Sto-Rox then turned on the gas in the second half, scoring 21 points in each of the last two quarters.
Washington scored 11 of his points in the third quarter as the Vikings improved to 5-4 overall.
Kaleb Servick led Ellwood City with 18 points, 11 in the first half.
PIHL HOCKEY
Richland 5, Montour 4
The Rams overcame a 3-2 deficit by scoring three times in the third period to beat the Spartans in a Varsity A Blue Division matchup at the RMU Island Sports Center.
The two teams battled to a 2-2 tie in the first period. With Luke Zacharias and Trey Varga scoring for Montour.
The Spartans took a 3-2 lead when Braden Kulak scored off assists from Logan Dobrowsky and Niko Sikorski 12 minutes into the second period.
But Richland scored three straight goals in the third period, with two of them coming in a 13-second span, to go on top 5-3.
Varga’s second goal of the game trimmed Richland’s lead to 5-4 but the Rams held on to win. Montour fell to 4-8-1-1 with the loss.
