Local student helps team reach NFL Flag Championship game
A David E. Williams Middle School student helped his team reach the finals of the NFL Flag Championships in Westfield, Ind., last weekend.
Donquia Snowden Jr. competed on the 10-and-under team representing the Pittsburgh Steelers in what was billed as the world’s largest youth flag football tournament July 23-26.
Snowden’s squad won three of its first four games to advance to the title game before falling 27-26 to a team representing the Seattle Seahawks.
Snowden registered a sack from his blitzer position and also caught a touchdown pass in the loss to Seattle.
In addition to his work in the championship game, Snowden ran for one touchdown and collected five other sacks on the weekend.
The Steelers’ 10U team won two of its first three games in the preliminary round, defeating the San Francisco 49ers, 19-0, and the Detroit Lions, 26-0, and falling 19-0 to the Carolina Panthers.
In the opening round of the playoffs, the Steelers blanked the Dallas Cowboys, 27-0, to reach the title game.
Two other area teams made the trek to Indiana to compete in the tournament – the 8U Pittsburgh Flag Football League Steel and the PFFL Ladies of Steel, a high school-level squad.
