Marie Van Brittan Brown: Pioneer of home security

“A woman alone could set off an alarm immediately by pressing a button, or if the system were installed in a doctor’s office, it might prevent holdups by drug addicts.”

~ Marie Van Brittan Brown

Did you know that Marie Van Brittan Brown was a pioneering inventor whose work laid the foundation for modern home security systems? Born in 1922 in Queens, N.Y., Brown was a nurse who often worked late hours while her husband, Albert L. Brown, was an electronics technician. Concerned about rising crime rates in their neighborhood and slow police response times, she thought of ways to make her home safer.

At a time when women—especially African-American women—were rarely recognized in science and technology fields, Brown’s determination and ingenuity set her apart. Her innovation would eventually influence the security systems that millions of people rely on today.

Did you know that in 1966, Brown and her husband designed one of the first closed-circuit television (CCTV) security systems for home use? Their invention allowed a homeowner to see visitors through a camera system connected to monitors inside the house. The design included four peepholes at different heights and a camera that could slide up and down to view each one.

Images were transmitted to a monitor, and the system also featured a two-way microphone for communication and a remote-controlled door lock for added safety. This groundbreaking design was patented in 1969 under U.S. Patent No. 3,482,037, titled “Home Security System.”

Did you know that Brown’s invention became the blueprint for many modern surveillance and security technologies? Although her original system was analog and relatively simple compared to today’s digital devices, its core concepts — video monitoring, remote door control and instant communication — are still central to contemporary home security. Modern CCTV cameras, video doorbells, and intercom systems trace their origins back to her design. Experts have noted that her work anticipated the increasing need for personal security in urban environments.

Did you know that Marie Van Brittan Brown’s legacy continues to inspire inventors, particularly women and people of color in STEM fields? Though she did not receive widespread recognition during her lifetime, she has since been honored for her contribution to technology and public safety. Her story reminds us that innovation often begins with everyday problems and courageous individuals willing to solve them.

In conclusion, the true power of innovation often begins with simple desire to feel safe at home, or to alleviate issues associated with everyday tasks. Marie Van Brittan Brown’s vision transformed personal security and reshaped everyday life around the globe. Her creativity proved that groundbreaking ideas can come from ordinary experiences. Today, every camera, intercom and smart doorbell carries a trace of her brilliance, reminding us that lasting change often starts with one determined mind.
