A McKees Rocks man was scheduled to be arraigned in Pittsburgh Municipal Court Saturday afternoon in connection with the fatal shooting of a woman inside a residence on Singer Avenue in McKees Rocks Friday night.
Allegheny County Police charged 19-year-old Jayden Knight with a single count of criminal homicide in connection with the shooting death of Mya Parker, 20, whose hometown was not released.
A preliminary hearing to determine if there is sufficient evidence to hold Knight for trial has been scheduled for April 8.
According to a criminal complaint, McKees Rocks police responded to an apartment at 23 Singer Ave. shortly after 8 p.m. Friday for a report of a female shot inside the residence.
There, police found Parker lying between the mattress and a wall in a bedroom inside the apartment. A resident told police that Parker had been staying with the resident and Knight for a couple of months.
Two witnesses told police they were in different rooms of the apartment when they heard a loud bang or a pop and then immediately heard the front door open. Both witnesses entered Parker’s room, where they saw Parker bleeding from the head, and one of the witnesses called 911.
Parker was taken by ambulance to Allegheny General Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 9:16 p.m.
According to the complaint, a McKees Rocks Police officer arrived at the scene and observed a man later identified as Knight standing at a bus stop across from Singer Avenue. The officer said Knight told him, “I’m the one you’re looking for, I did it.”
According to the complaint, when the officer asked Knight where the gun was, Knight reportedly replied, “It’s in the room.”
A search warrant was obtained for the apartment and both a 9mm gun and one spent cartridge casing were recovered from the room.
