Two West Hills area teams will attempt to remain unbeaten this weekend as the high school football season moves into its fourth week of action.
Montour, 2-0 and ranked No. 2 in Class 4A by the Pittsburgh Union Progress, will host Knoch at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13, at Thomas J. Birko Memorial Stadium.
Cornell, 3-0 and ranked No. 5 in Class 1A, will travel to take on Burgettstown (1-1).
In other games involving West Hills area schools, Bishop Canevin – ranked No. 3 in Class 1A by the Union Progress — treks to New Castle to meet winless Laurel, Carlynton hosts Apollo Ridge, Sto-Rox visits Keystone Oaks, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart travels to battle South Allegheny and Moon entertains West Allegheny.
All games are scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
Daniel Batch’s 6-yard touchdown run with less than three minutes to play helped Montour to a 14-7 win over Trinity last week. Caleb Halajcio ran for 138 yards in 27 carries to pace the Spartans’ offensive attack. Montour’s defense came up with three interceptions and held Trinity to 179 total yards.
Spartans quarterback Trey Hopper completed 11 of 18 pass attempts for 130 yards, including an 11-yard touchdown strike to AJ Alston. Alston finished with seven receptions for 95 yards.
The Spartans’ upcoming opponent was trailing 13-7 to Fox Chapel when the game was canceled. The Knights beat North Catholic, 28-17, and lost to Kiski Area, 42-7.
Cornell had an easy time of it last week, blitzing Riverview, 52-9. Khylil Johnson put on a show, returning the opening kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown, running a punt back 75 yards for another score and hauling in a 32-yard touchdown pass from quarterback M.J. Stuckey.
Walter Clarit ran for 140 yards and three touchdowns for the Raiders. Stuckey hit on 4 of 7 passes for 67 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
Myontae Mott led the way in Bishop Canevin’s win over Steel Valley last week, scoring on runs of 3, 6 and 15 yards and returning a kickoff 78 yards for a touchdown. The win boosted the Crusaders’ record to 1-1.
Laurel lost 9-7 to Riverside of Ellwood City Saturday in the completion of a game that was suspended due to lightning just over a minute into Friday’s game. Laurel had a chance to win the game when it misfired on a 21-yard field goal attempt.
Carlynton had its two-game win streak snapped in a 37-13 loss to South Allegheny. The Gladiators jumped to a 28-0 halftime lead and were never challenged. The Cougars were looking for their first 3-0 start since 1997.
OLSH had its game with Seton LaSalle halted after three quarters due to lightning. The Chargers were trailing 18-7 at the time the game ended.
Moon fell 14-7 to Penn-Trafford last week. The Tigers trailed 14-0 before Andrew Cross hit Paul Bronaugh on a 27-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter, but they could not capitalize on several scoring opportunities in the final quarter.
Sto-Rox fell to 0-2-1 with a 21-14 loss to Brentwood. The Vikings will be facing a winless team, as Keystone Oaks is 0-2, with its most recent loss coming 42-6 last week to South Park.
