Moon boys reach title match in WPIAL soccer tournament

Zechariah Balbach notched the game-winning goal in the third minute of overtime to lead unbeaten Moon to a 3-2 victory over Bethel Park Monday night in the semifinals of the WPIAL Class 3A boys soccer tournament at Dormont Stadium.

The victory vaults the top-seeded Tigers – now 21-0 – into Saturday’s Class 3A championship match against No. 7 seed Franklin Regional, a 2-1 winner over Mars Monday. Saturday’s final will start at 5:45 p.m. at Highmark Stadium.

Both Moon and Franklin Regional already have secured berths in the PIAA tournament, which is scheduled to begin Tuesday, Nov. 5, at a site and time to be determined.

The top three finishers in the WPIAL tournament will advance to the state championships.

Xavier Jackson, who netted the game-winning goals in each of Bethel Park’s previous two tournament games, scored both goals for the Black Hawks Monday, and both came in the opening half.

Evan Thomas scored a goal in each half for Moon, and his second goal came late in the second half to send the match into overtime.
