Both West Hills area schools posted narrow victories Tuesday night in the opening round of the PIAA boys soccer tournament and will advance to Saturday’s quarterfinal round in their respective classes.
In the Class 3A tournament, defender Billy Sprott’s late goal snapped a 1-1 deadlock and sent Moon to a 2-1 victory over Lampeter-Strasburg at Moon Area High School.
And in the Class 1A tournament, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart rebounded from a loss in the WPIAL title match by squeezing out a 1-0 victory on the road over Brockway.
Moon’s victory extended the Tigers’ season-long winning streak to 23 matches and vaulted them into quarterfinal-round action against City League champion Alderdice, which defeated District 10 champ General McLane, 1-0, Tuesday night at Cupples Stadium.
The site and time for Saturday’s quarterfinal game will be determined later.
OLSH, now 16-3, will take on McConnellsburg, a 1-0 winner over Halifax Tuesday night. The site and time for Saturday’s quarterfinal matchup will be determined later. It will be the Chargers’ first trip to the quarterfinals since 2011.
McConnellsburg, the District 5 champion, is 18-3-1.
Alderdice will bring a record of 14-4-1 into Saturday’s match against Moon.
In Moon’s win over Lampeter-Strasburg Tuesday night, Aedan Costa, who scored the go-ahead goal in Moon’s 3-1 victory over Franklin Regional in Saturday night’s WPIAL championship match, netted a first-half goal and helped the Tigers to a 1-1 halftime tie.
The contest remained tied until late in the proceedings when Sprott scored off an assist from Finnian Dengel.
