Moon, OLSH face quarterfinal tests in PIAA boys soccer tournament

Two West Hills area schools will try to keep their respective trains rolling when they take the pitch Saturday in the quarterfinals of the WPIAL boys soccer tournament.

Undefeated WPIAL champion Moon will attempt to stretch its season-long winning streak to 24 when it battles Pittsburgh City League champ Alderdice at 7 p.m. at Peters Township Middle School in the Class 3A tournament.

And in the Class A tournament, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart – runner-up in the WPIAL tournament – travels to Price Field at Westmont Elementary in Johnstown to take on McConnellsburg, the District 5 champion, at noon.

Moon opened its PIAA tournament action by spotting Lampeter-Strasburg – District 3’s No. 4 representative – a 1-0 lead before goals by Aedan Costa and Billy Sprott brought the Tigers back for a 2-1 victory.

Alderdice scored the only goal it needed in the third minute of play in edging General McLane, 1-0, Tuesday.

Moon has never won a PIAA boys soccer championship but has reached the state tournament a number of times.

OLSH brings a 16-3 record into Saturday’s matchup against McConnellsburg, having squeezed out a 1-0 victory over Brockway Tuesday night.

Luke Wrabley scored the only goal of the match for the Chargers off a corner kick just over midway through the second half.

OLSH controlled major portions of the match and outshot the Rovers 24-5.

Like Moon, OLSH reached the WPIAL title game but unlike the Tigers, the Chargers came up short, losing to Bentworth on penalty kicks. OLSH has been living on the proverbial edge the entire postseason, winning one WPIAL playoff game on an own goal, another in overtime and a third on penalty kicks.

McConnellsburg, 18-3-1, advanced to Saturday’s matchup with OLSH by edging Halifax, 1-0.
