Vann Kavals’ fourth-quarter touchdown pass snapped a 6-6 tie with less than six minutes to play, and Our Lady of the Sacred Heart held on in the final minutes to secure a 12-6 victory over visiting Rochester Friday night in the season-opener for both teams.
Kavals and Iseia Fields-Schulz connected on an 82-yard pass for the game-winning score after the Chargers recovered a fumble on a Rochester punt return.
Kavals had earlier teamed with Ethan Davis on a 72-yard scoring strike to give the Chargers a 6-0 lead in the second quarter.
But Rochester answered later in the quarter when Carter Mason took an OLSH punt and returned it 64 yards for a touchdown.
The Rams failed to convert a 2-point conversion pass, leaving the score tied at 6-6.
Neither team was able to score in the third quarter, setting the stage for Kavals’ game-winning toss to Fields-Schulz in the final quarter.
Rochester threatened in the game’s final minutes, as quarterback Patrick Bable began using his legs to move the Rams deep into OLSH territory.
But on a fourth-down play at the Chargers 15-yard line, Bable fumbled on a fourth-down carry and OLSH’s Kassius Gildon recovered to nail down the win.
Kavals finished the game with 11 completions in 31 attempts for 258 yards. He was intercepted three times.
Davis led the receiving corps with four catches for 113 yards while Fields-Schulz had three receptions for 93 yards.
OLSH held Rochester to 11 passing yards but the Rams totaled 155 yards on the ground to just 22 yards on the ground for the Chargers.
Kavals also was a force on defense as he registered 11 total tackles and two sacks, forced a fumble and broke up a pass.
Owen Nestor had five tackles, recovered a fumble and thwarted Rochester’s 2-point conversion attempt by deflecting a pass, keeping the game tied.
Linebacker Owen Tonery had 10 total tackles and fellow linebacker Chris Harris added nine.
The Chargers will look to extend their record to 2-0 when they travel to take on Fort Cherry at 7 p.m. Friday.
