PIAA basketball: Montour’s season ends with loss to Chartiers Valley

Jayden Davis scored 18 points and Chartiers Valley outscored Montour by a combined 14 points in the first and last quarters to knock off the Spartans, 48-38, Tuesday night in the second round of the PIAA Class 5A boys basketball tournament at Bethel Park High School.

The loss ends Montour’s season at 25-3 while the Colts advance to the state quarterfinals, where the will take on Greater Johnstown, which defeated Greater Latrobe Tuesday night.

Chartiers Valley handed the Spartans two of their three losses, with the previous one coming in semifinals of the WPIAL Tournament. Montour defeated Chartiers Valley twice in section play.

Chartiers Valley opened the game by outscoring Montour 19-10 in the first quarter. The Colts scored only six points in the second quarter, but they also held the Spartans to just seven points and went into halftime with a 25-17 lead.

Montour closed the gap in the third quarter, outscoring the Colts 12-9 to pull within 34-29 heading into the final eight minutes.

But Chartiers Valley wound up putting 14 points on the board to just nine for the Spartans, and that proved to be the difference.

Colton Straight led Montour with 14 points. Seniors Kaleb Platz added 12 and Ama Sow contributed 10 in their final games in a Spartans uniform.

Montour coach Bill Minear said his team had to play from behind most of the night and at one point in the third quarter trailed by 10 points. But the Spartans were able to cut the deficit to one in the fourth quarter.

Chartiers Valley converted a three-point play with two minutes to play, and from that point on, the Spartans were forced to foul. The Colts were able to convert enough free throws to secure the win.

Montour had an uncharacteristically rough night shooting from long distance and that proved to be a key factor in the loss.

“All season we’ve shot 40% from (3-point distance),” Minear said. “Tonight we were 0-for-16 from (3-point distance). It’s a big part of our game.”

The Spartans also played most of the second half without starting point guard AJ Alston, who sustained a split eyelid and eyebrow from an errant elbow.
