PIAA basketball: OLSH boys fall to Sewickley Academy in quarterfinals, 42-35

Our Lady of the Sacred Heart’s bid for a PIAA boys class 2A state basketball title ended Saturday with a 42-35 quarterfinal loss to Sewickley Academy at Peters Township High School.

The Chargers, playing without their strongest inside presence in 6-foot-5 Vann Kavals, got off to a fast start but couldn’t keep up with the Panthers in the final eight minutes and saw their season end with a 21-8 record.

Getting points from five players, OLSH enjoyed a 12-5 lead after one quarter. Sewickley Academy outscored the Chargers 10-7 in the second quarter, but OLSH still led at halftime, 19-15.

The Panthers, on the strength of Nolan Donnelly’s seven third-quarter points, forged a 28-28 tie in the third quarter.

Donnelly added seven more in final eight minutes as Sewickley Academy outscored the Chargers 14-7 to earn the win.

Donnelly had gone scoreless in the first two quarters.

Mamadau Kane added 13 to go along with Donnelley’s 14 for the Panthers.

Tiernan McCullough led OLSH with 16 points.
