PIHL hockey: Moon Area overpowers Richland; Montour rallies to beat Indiana

The Moon Area Tigers closed out their regular PIHL Varsity A Blue schedule with an 11-2 shellacking of Richland Monday night in Ebensburg.

The Tigers finished the regular season on a six-game winning streak and they have won eight of their last nine games to improve to 14-3-1-1 overall, good for third place in the division behind Canon-McMillan and Quaker Valley.

Gio Thompson led the onslaught with a hat trick while Peyton Whartenby added a pair of goals for Moon.

The Tigers also got single goals from Brooks Underwood, Jordan Rieke, Ryan Muldowney, Logan Rieke, Ben Poeta and Eric Hartman.

Brody Eckert assisted on four Moon goals while David Gallup notched three assists and Underwood and Tanner Desselle each added two.

Moon led 3-1 after one period and then scored five times in the second period to put the game away.


Montour 4, Indiana 3

The Spartans scored twice in the last five minutes of the second period to take a one-goal lead and held on for the victory Monday night at the RMU Island Sports Center.

Montour trailed 3-2 until Talon Bruce Miller scored off an assist from Austin Lipinski 12 minutes, eight seconds into the second period to tie the score.

A little over two minutes later, Trey Varga converted a power play opportunity to put the Spartans in front 4-3. Donnie Seremak and Braden Kulak assisted on what proved to be the game-winning goal.

Varga scored the game’s first goal and Miller added a second off an assist from Colin Rogers to give Montour a 2-0 first-period lead.

Indiana answered with three straight goals before the Spartans came back to win.

Montour improved to 6-11-1-1 with the win.
