The West Carson Street Bridge over Chartiers Creek is the subject of an upcoming rehabilitation project by the City of Pittsburgh.

Rehab of ‘poor’-rated West Carson Street Bridge to be discussed

Rehabilitation plans for the West Carson Street Bridge over Chartiers Creek are in motion, with a public meeting scheduled in the Esplen neighborhood of Pittsburgh Wednesday evening.

Although the bridge is rated as “poor” on the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation bridge condition map, this rating is related to the substructure with the deck and superstructure conditions listed in “fair” condition.

A bridge with a “poor” rating is not considered to be in imminent danger but has been found to show signs of structural deterioration.

Built in 1925, the bridge is located on the border of the City of Pittsburgh and McKees Rocks and was last overhauled in 1978. The Federal Highway Administration indicates the steel truss throughway meets requirements for rehabilitation and/or replacement.

With about 15% of use being related to truck traffic, the bridge is posted for load restrictions of 30 tons or a combined weight of 40 tons.

According to the city, the project is in its preliminary engineering phase, which includes surveys, coordination with environmental and utility concerns, and other field planning initiatives. A final design is expected to be completed in late 2026 or early 2027 with construction in 2028.

The community meeting is scheduled from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 6, at the Sons of God Ministry, 200 Tabor St., Esplen.

Registration while not required is requested.
