Riverhounds look to down Loudoun for third time this season Saturday
The Pittsburgh Riverhounds will try to make it three wins in three tries against Loudoun United FC when the two teams meet at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, at F.N.B. Stadium on the South Shore.
Pittsburgh defeated Loudoun, 3-2, in the Washington D.C. area on March 14. The two squads matched up again during the USL Cup on July 11, when the Hounds came away with a 2-0 victory.
The United are 3-8-11 on the season, and their leading scorers are Zach Ryan and Wesley Leggett, who have 10 and eight goals, respectively.
The Riverhounds are 10-9-5 after a 2-2 draw vs. Miami FC Sunday. The match was moved from Saturday to Sunday due to heavy thunderstorms and lightning in Miami.
The first half had a slow start offensively on both ends. When the match neared the 30-minute mark, the Hounds began to find their game and created opportunities by Eliot Goldthorp, Charles Ahl and Sam Bassett, but no goals came about.
Miami was the first to score in stoppage time (45 + 4) when Rodrigo Da Costa moved along the right side of the Pittsburgh box and stole the ball from a Hounds’ defender. He then headed a pass to Arney Rocha standing in front of the net, who tapped home a shot past goalkeeper Nico Campuzano for a 1-0 lead.
At 45 + 8 stoppage time, the Riverhounds applied pressure, which led to Trevor Amann being interfered with and knocked over in the middle of the Miami box, resulting in a penalty kick. Amann faked to the right, sending goalkeeper Elroy Room diving to that side, while Amann slid a shot to the left to tie the score at 1-1 and send the game into the break. The goal was Amann’s seventh giving him the team lead, though he has scored 11 goals in total when including tournament play.
The second half began with two very good saves by Campuzano, which kept the game tied. Campuzano had five saves in the match.
At the 60-minute mark, the Hounds swarmed the Miami box, and Danny Griffin slid a pass to Bassett, who worked for space and unloaded a shot that bounced off the inner left post and past Room to give the Hounds a 2-1 lead.
Pittsburgh maintained the lead into stoppage time but with the victory within reach, the Hounds allowed Miami to work into their box where Rocha moved along the right side and sent a high pass toward the front of the net. Daltyn Knutson moved under the pass and sent a header past Campuzano to tie the score at 90 + 10 and the match ended in a draw.
Late stoppage time goals have haunted the Hounds over the past few games, which has left four possible points on the table. The Riverhounds are currently in fourth place in the Eastern Division, but had they not allowed late goals to El Paso and Miami, they could be tied for second place.
