Riverhounds secure win over Miami FC, travel to meet Charleston Battery in USL Cup play

The Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC will be in action at 7 p.m. Saturday, June 6, against the Charleston Battery in Charleston, S.C.  The match will continue the Hounds’ participation in the Prinx Tires USL Cup series, where they are 1-0-1 and sit in third place in Group F.

Charleston is 2-0-0 and in first place in Group F Cup play, where they are led by their leading scorer, Colton Swan.  The Battery defeated the Riverhounds 2-1 in regular season USL action on March 7.

Pittsburgh, 5-4-1 in regular season USL action, won an important match over Miami FC this past Saturday in front of a sellout crowd at FNB Stadium.  Miami came into the match in second place in the Eastern Division, but the Riverhounds played one of their most complete games of the season in their 2-0 victory.

Neither team was able to generate offense in a scoreless first half, though Pittsburgh’s Eliot Goldthorp continuously pressured the Miami net and ended the game with seven shots.

The first goal of the match didn’t occur until the 49-minute mark of the second half when Perrin Barnes secured a crossing pass from Charles Ahl that had sailed across the goal mouth.  Barnes redirected the ball back across the goal where Albert Dikwa scored an impressive goal on a lunging header for a 1-0 Pittsburgh lead. The goal was Dikwa’s sixth of the season and ties him for the league lead in that department.

The Riverhounds took a 2-0 lead at the 73-minute mark when they smoothly moved the ball into the Miami zone where Dikwa slid a pass to Ahl, whose hard shot from the left side beat goalkeeper Felipe Rodriguez.  Riverhounds goalkeeper Nico Campuzano recorded his second straight clean sheet in the win.

Miami FC is now 4-4-4 for the season and tied with the Riverhounds for fourth place in the Eastern Division.
