The Pittsburgh Riverhounds will participate in the U.S. Open Cup Round of 32 with a match against Major League Soccer’s New York Red Bulls at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 15, at Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, N.J.
The Red Bulls are 3-2-2 for the season and in seventh place in the Eastern Conference of the MLS and are led by Julian Hall with five goals. Pittsburgh’s record against MLS opponents is 3-2 since 2023, and the match will mark the fourth consecutive year that the Riverhounds have advanced to the Round of 32.
The Riverhounds are now 2-1-3 in USL play for the season after dropping a 1-0 match Sunday to the previously winless Birmingham Legion FC at Protective Stadium in Birmingham, Ala.
The road-weary Hounds, who have played five of their first six USL matches away from home, changed starting personnel and formations to generate more offense, but with little success. The Riverhounds matched the Legion in shots with 10, but they recorded only one on target for the entire game. Possession was won by the Legion, but barely, with 51%.
Birmingham scored the match’s only goal at the 25-minute mark when Dawson McCartney came down the left side and sent a crossing pass toward the near post that Sebastian Tregarthen guided into the goal with one touch, beating Hounds’ goalkeeper Nico Campuzano.
Pittsburgh had its chances, but Eliot Goldthorp and Albert Dikwa could not cash in on good scoring opportunities. The clean sheet by Legion goalkeeper Jassem Koleilat continued Birmingham’s defensive prowess at home, where they have allowed only one goal in three home games.
