RMU basketball: Men drop close game to Northern Kentucky; women fall to Oakland

The Robert Morris men’s basketball team rallied from nine points down in the second half but came up just short in dropping a 79-77 decision to Northern Kentucky Monday night in a Horizon League matchup at the UPMC Events Center in Moon Township.

The Colonials, who fell to 10-5 overall and 2-2 in league play, will return to league action Friday, Jan. 2, in Detroit against Detroit Mercy.

Robert Morris trailed 71-62 with a little over 6 minutes to play but pulled within two points at 77-75 after Nikolaos Chitikoudis converted a layup with 34 seconds remaining.

Northern Kentucky turned it over on the ensuing inbound play, but Robert Morris returned the turnover favor 20 seconds later, squandering a chance to tie or take the lead.

The Colonials then fouled with 11 seconds remining and Northern Kentucky’s Donovan Oday converted both to make it 79-75. DeSean Goode’s basket cut it to 79-77 with 2 seconds remaining, but it was too little, too late.

Goode led Robert Morris with 18 points while Ryan Prather and Albert Vargas each added 15 and Chitikoudis finished with 13.

Robert Morris was in a four-way tie for second place in the Horizon League entering Monday night’s game, and the Colonials’ 10 overall victories were the most amongst conference members.

The leading scorers for RMU on the season entering Monday night’s game were Goode with 14.4 points per game, Prather 13.2 ppg, Chitikoudis 11.8 ppg, Josh Hill 8.8 ppg, Darius Livingston 8.5 ppg and Vargas with 8.1 ppg.

Goode leads the Colonials in rebounding with an average of nine per game, Prather leads in steals with 14, Vargas’ 58 assists lead the team, and Hill leads in blocks with seven.


Oakland upends Colonial women, 61-58

The Robert Morris women’s basketball team dropped its first Horizon League matchup of the season, 61-58, Monday to visiting Oakland University at the UPMC Events Center in Moon Township.

The Grizzlies entered the game 3-9 overall and 0-2 in league play while the Colonials came in 9-2 overall and 2-0 in the Horizon League. But it was Oakland that pulled out the win, dropping the Colonials to 9-3 overall and 2-1 in league play.

The contest was tight throughout, with Robert Morris leading 33-31 at halftime and 47-46 heading into the final quarter.

But Oakland outscored the Colonials 15-11 in the last quarter, including an 11-0 run to end the game over the final 4 minutes, 41 seconds.

Robert Morris’ last basket came on Jada Lee’s layup that gave the Colonials a 58-58 lead.

Bailey Kuhns led the Colonials with 23 points and Noa Givon added 10. Aislin Malcolm, Robert Morris’ leading scorer this season at 12.3 points per game, was held to six.

Robert Morris returns to action on the road at 7 p.m. Friday against Milwaukee.


Men’s hockey travels to take on Sacred Heart

The Robert Morris men’s hockey team will travel to Fairfield, Conn., to play a conference game against the Sacred Heart Pioneers at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 30.

The matchup will pit the seventh-place Colonials against the sixth-place Pioneers in Atlantic Hockey America action.  Robert Morris enters the game at 4-10-2 overall and 4-3-1 in conference, while Sacred Heart is 7-7-2 overall and 4-4-2 in conference.

Felix Trudeau leads the Pioneers in both goals and points with 15 and 18, respectively. 

Ryan Taylor leads the Colonials in scoring with six goals and six assists, Cameron Garvey has five goals and five assists, Tanner Klimpke has scored four goals and added six assists.

In addition, Jackson Reineke has six goals and two assists, Michael Craig has added three goals and five assists, Bruce McDonals has eight assists, and George Krotiris has three goals and three assists.

Charlie Schenkel has a 3.13 goals against average in net for Robert Morris.
