The Robert Morris men’s basketball team will play its biggest conference game of the season thus far when it takes on the first-place Wright State Raiders at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4, at the UPMC Events Center in Moon Township.
Wright State is on a three-game win streak and is 15-8 overall and 10-2 in Horizon League action. The Raiders are led by Michael Cooper, who is averaging 14.5 points per game.
Robert Morris enters the game with a 14-10 overall record and a 6-7 conference mark. DeSean Goode and Ryan Prather lead the Colonials, averaging 15 points each per game. Goode is also shooting 62% from the field and 61% from the 3-point arc.
The Colonials fell below .500 in conference play with a key 83-71 loss to Purdue-Fort Wayne Saturday at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum in Indiana. With the win, the Mastodons swept the series against the defending champions.
Purdue-FW jumped out early and held the lead until RMU went on a 13-2 run late in the first half to take a 37-35 lead into the locker room.
In the second half, Robert Morris kept the game close by outrebounding the Mastodons 32-24, but the Colonials committed 15 turnovers, which resulted in 21 fast-break points for Purdue-FW.
Purdue-FW began to take control of the game with the play of the Horizon League’s leading scorer, Corey Hadnot, who had a game-high 21 points and added seven rebounds. The Mastodons continued with their defensive pressure, causing nine steals, and solidified the win by hitting 19 of 20 free throws, which were a key factor late in the game.
Goode led Robert Morris with 17 points, Prather added 16, Albert Vargas chipped in 11 and Nikolaos Chitikoudis had 10 points and seven rebounds. Purdue-Fort Wayne is now 14-9 for the season and 8-4 in the Horizon League.
Colonial women defeat IU-Indy; face UW-Green Bay
The Robert Morris women’s basketball team will have its hands full when the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay Phoenix come to the UPMC Events Center for a key Horizon League matchup – and an early tipoff at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 5.
UW-Green Bay is 18-5 overall and undefeated in conference play at 13-0. The first-place Phoenix are also on a 10-game win streak. Jenna Guyer leads UW-Green Bay with a 14.7 points per game average and Meghan Schultz is averaging 12.3 ppg. The Colonials lost to the Phoenix in Green Bay, 64-43, on Jan. 4.
Robert Morris is in third place in the Horizon League with a 15-7 overall record and 8-5 in conference. Aislin Malcolm leads RMU with 11.9 points per game and Mariam Traore is averaging 10.7 ppg.
The Colonials are coming off a solid 76-71 road victory over the University of Indiana-Indianapolis on Sunday – RMU’s first-ever road win against the Jaguars.
The game was very tight throughout the first half, and the Jaguars were thinking upset as they went into the half with a 33-32 lead.
In the second half, RMU went on a 10-0 run, which gave the Colonials their largest lead of the game at 48-39. The Jaguars answered with a 15-6 run of their own to eventually tie the game at 54-54.
Robert Morris won the rebound battle 39-21 and had a great inside game with 46 points in the paint but turned the ball over 24 times to keep the Jaguars in the game. The Colonials eventually solidified the win by shooting 55.6% from the field and 80% from the charity stripe, the latter being a major factor in the victory.
Ava Leroux had a career and a game-high 21 points for Robert Morris. Leroux was also 7-for-7 from the field and 7-for-7 from the free-throw line.
Bailey Kuhns scored 20 points and had seven rebounds, Malcolm added 13 points and Traore and Jada Lee each pitched in seven rebounds.
