The Robert Morris men’s basketball team, in the midst of a three-game losing streak, will look to get back on track when it takes on the Northern Kentucky Norse in a Horizon League game at 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, in Highland Heights, Ky.
Northern Kentucky enters the contest with a 14-6 overall record and a 6-3 mark in league play. The Norse will feature Donovan Oday, who is averaging 17.1 points per game and is shooting over 50% from the field, and Dan Herezgher who is averaging 15.8 ppg. The third-place Norse defeated the Colonials in Moon Township on Dec. 29, 79-77.
Robert Morris is coming off arguably its worst loss of the season when it dropped a 96-93 road contest to Indiana University-Indianapolis on Thursday. The Jaguars came into the game with a 4-15 overall record and were winless (0-8) in the Horizon League, but the Colonials were unable to take advantage of two double-digit leads in the loss.
The Colonials jumped out to a quick 10-point lead, but IU-Indy went on a 12-0 run to take a 17-15 lead. The first half continued with back-and-forth lead changes until RMU was able to build a 41-38 halftime advantage.
The Colonials opened the second half on an 11-2 run and held a 12-point lead until IU-Indy answered with an 11-0 run of its own. Ties and lead changes were again prevalent in the second half, and the game ended in regulation at 81-81.
IU-Indy outscored the Colonials 15-12 in overtime, and the Jaguars made five free throws in the final minute that sealed the win. Robert Morris attempted to tie the game with a last- second buzzer shot by Albert Vargas that missed the mark.
Robert Morris shot 50.8% from the field, 48.3% from the 3-point range and 77.8% from the charity stripe, though it was the defensive lapses that led to the loss. IU-Indy shot 44.4% from the 3-point line.
Ryan Prather led the Colonials with 21 points and IU-Indy transfer DeSean Goode scored 20 points and added eight rebounds against his former team. Vargas added 14 points for RMU and Nikolaus Chitikoudis and Josh Hill had seven rebounds each.
Kyler D’Augustino had a game-high 28 points for the Jaguars.
Robert Morris is now on a three-game losing streak, and its overall record stands at 11-8, while being 3-5 in the Horizon League.
RMU women takes on Cleveland State Sunday
The Robert Morris women’s basketball team will travel to Cleveland to battle the Cleveland State Vikings in Horizon League action at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 18.
The Vikings are led by Izabella Zingaro, who is averaging 15.5 points and six rebounds per game, while shooting over 63% from the field. Colbi Maples is also averaging 14.3 ppg for the Vikings. Cleveland State is 14-5 overall and 4-4 in conference play, while the Colonials enter the game at 12-5 overall and 5-3 in the Horizon League.
The Colonials are coming off an overtime Horizon league victory over the Indiana University-Indianapolis Jaguars on Thursday at UPMC Events Center in Moon Township.
The first half featured a defensive contest that resulted in a 35-34 IU-Indy halftime lead. The second half was no different as both teams jockeyed for the lead, but the score at the end of regulation was 66-66 and the game headed for overtime. Robert Morris took control in overtime, outscoring the Jaguars 14-4 for the win.
The Colonials shot 56.3% from the field, 86.2% from the free throw line and outrebounded the Jaguars 35-16. Robert Morris had difficulty from the 3-point line, scoring only 14 points from the arc, though they compensated by pouring in 50 points from the paint.
Mariam Traore scored a game high 22 points, Ava Leroux added 14 points and six rebounds, Aislin Malcolm had 13 points, while Eva Levingston and Mallory Daly combined for 13 . Olivia Smith had a team high of 19 points for the Jaguars.
Robert Morris is now in fourth place in the Horizon League, while IU-Indy is 6-11 overall and 2-6 in conference.
