RMU basketball: Men take on Purdue-Fort Wayne; women visit IU-Indy

The Robert Morris men’s basketball team returns to the hardwood for a Horizon League game against the Purdue-Fort Wayne Mastodons at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, in Fort Wayne, Ind.

The contest will pit the Colonials (14-9, 6-6) against the Mastodons (13-9, 7-4) in a pivotal conference battle. Purdue-FW features one of the best players in the conference in Corey Hadnot, who is averaging 20 points per game and shooting 52% from the field. Robert Morris lost to Purdue-FW, 79-74, at home on Jan. 11.

The Colonials improved to 6-6 in Horizon League play with a decisive 75-58 win over Indiana University-Indianapolis on Wednesday at the UPMC Events Center.

The Colonials were looking to avenge a 96-93 overtime loss to the Jaguars on Jan. 15 in Indianapolis.  The Jaguars entered the game without the services of their top scorer, Kyler D’Agostino, but the first half appeared to be heading in the same high-scoring direction. After 10 first-half lead changes, the half ended with RMU leading 36-33.

The second half was a different story as the Colonials played lock-down defense with nine steals and dominated the boards by a 40-21 advantage. Offensively, RMU kicked it up a notch and shot 50% from 3-point range and close to 50% from the field on the way to a 17-point win.

Ryan Prather led the Colonials with a game-high 20 points, Darius Livingston added 14, Ta’Zir Smith chipped in 11 and Nikolaos Chitikoudis had nine points and 11 rebounds.

Robert Morris is tied with Northern Kentucky for the most overall wins among the Horizon League members with 14. IU-Indianapolis is now 6-17 overall and 2-10 in conference action.


RMU women lose pivotal game to Purdue-FW

The Robert Morris women’s basketball team will travel to Indiana to take on Indiana University-Indianapolis in a Horizon League game at 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 1.

 The Jaguars are 8-12 overall and 4-7 in Horizon League play and feature Navaeh Foster, who is averaging 11.9 points per game, and Olivia Smith, averaging 10.7 ppg.

The Colonials dropped a key conference game on Tuesday in Fort Wayne, Ind., when they lost 60-46 to Purdue-Fort Wayne. Robert Morris and Purdue-FW are battling for the upper echelon of the Horizon League standings, and the loss dropped the Colonials to 7-5, while Purdue-FW improved to 8-4 in conference play.

Robert Morris and Purdue-FW played an even first half, and the Colonials took a 25-24 lead into halftime. Both teams continued to battle in a tight game into the second half, which saw RMU leading midway into the half by a score of 40-37.

The latter portion of the second half was a different story as Purdue-FW outscored RMU 23-6, including a 12-0 run. The difference in the game was Robert Morris shooting only 32% from the field and going 1-for-17 from 3-point range, while being outscored in the paint 50-30.

Eva Levingston led the Colonials with 13 points and Mariam Traore added 12. Lili Krasovec had a game-high 24 points and seven rebounds to lead Purdue-FW.
