The Robert Morris men’s basketball team returns to the hardwood at 7 p.m. Thursday with a game at Wolstein Center in Cleveland against the Cleveland State Vikings.
The Vikings will enter the Horizon League matchup with a 10-15 overall record and sit at 6-8 in conference. Their leading scorers are Dayan Nessah, who averages 16.0 points per game and is shooting 55% from the field, and Tre Beard, who is averaging 14.1 ppg and hitting from the 3-point arc at a 43.8% clip.
Robert Morris enters the game on a two-game win streak and is now 16-10 overall and 8-7 in the Horizon League. The Colonials are ranked third in defense (74.0 per game) and ninth in offense (77.2 per game) within the conference, with an overall margin of 3.2, which is good enough for fourth overall.
The Colonials picked up a much-needed win Saturday when they defeated the Youngstown State Penguins, 72-66, in Youngstown, Ohio. The first half was a tightly fought contest that featured six ties and four lead changes. Robert Morris eventually went on a 15-6 run, which opened up the game and led to a 41-30 halftime lead.
Youngstown State opened the second half by scoring 16 of the first 18 points in a seven-minute span. Cris Carroll was the primary catalyst as he scored 13 of his 20 points in the second half.
The Colonials turned the ball over 13 times, and YSU executed eight steals, while winning the inside game, scoring 42 points in the paint even though RMU outrebounded the Penguins 32-23.
Robert Morris turned to outside shooting and shot 38.5% from the 3-point line. The Colonials went on a 12-0 run at the 4:02 mark to open a 61-57 lead, which they never relinquished. The Colonials swept the series against YSU with the win.
DeSean Goode had a game-high 24 points for RMU and added seven rebounds, a performance that netted him Horizon League player of the week honors. Ryan Prather scored 16 points and had six assists, Darius Livingston had 12 points, Caleb Brown added 10 and Nikolaos Chitkoudis chipped in with nine rebounds. Livingston was named the league’s top freshman of the week.
Colonial women continue to stack wins
The Robert Morris women’s basketball team continues Horizon League play at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday with a key game in Youngstown, Ohio, against the Youngstown State Penguins.
The Colonials will be looking to sweep the series after defeating YSU, 55-40, on Jan. 21. The second-place Penguins are 17-8 overall and 10-5 in conference and feature the top defensive team in the League. Casey Santoro is Youngstown State’s leading scorer, averaging 12.3 points per game.
Robert Morris is in third place in the Horizon League and features the fourth-best defense (59.9 points per game) and the eighth-ranked offense (65.4 points per game) with the fifth-best overall margin of 5.5.
The Colonials continued their climb in the Horizon League standings with a 71-64 overtime home win Saturday against the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Panthers.
Robert Morris came out of the gates quickly and took a 23-8 lead, primarily led by Eva Levingston, who finished the game with 19 points and seven rebounds. UW-Milwaukee answered with a 12-2 run and the game entered the half with RMU leading 29-26.
The second half was a tightly fought back-and-forth scoring battle between the two teams. Grace Lomen scored a game-high 30 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the 3-point arc, while adding five rebounds for Milwaukee.
Robert Morris responded with defense as the Colonials caused 13 turnovers and had eight steals, while scoring 30 points in the paint. In addition, four of the Colonials’ starting five scored in double figures, and regulation ended in a 57-57 stalemate.
The Colonials went to work early in overtime by going on an 8-0 run, which allowed them to solidify the win. Aislin Malcolm scored 18 points for RMU, Bailey Kuhns added 14 and eight rebounds and Jada Lee had a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds.
