The Robert Morris University men’s hockey team will look to stay on track this weekend when it hosts Bentley at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday at Clearview Arena.
The Colonials are coming off a sweep of last weekend’s two-game home set with Holy Cross, winning 5-2 on Friday and 1-0 on Saturday.
The sweep left RMU with an overall record of 7-15-2 and a 7-8-1 mark in Atlantic Hockey America action, good for sixth place in the conference heading into this weekend’s games.
The men kicked things off Friday night with RMU forward Bruce McDonald burying a goal just over 10 minutes into the first period. Exactly a minute and a half later, Holy Cross forward Matt DeBoer tied the game with a power play goal.
With 3:03 left in the first period, RMU captain Tanner Klimpke gave the Colonials the 2-1 lead. Then just 33 seconds later, RMU extended its lead, off a goal from forward Trent Wilson.
In the second period, forward Julian Beaumont increased RMU’s lead to 4-1 with 8:27 left. In the third period, forward Jackson Reineke capitalized on the power play with 5:18 left in the game to widen the Colonials’ lead to 5-1.
Holy Cross did not go away quietly, however, as forward Jack Stockfish buried a goal with 1:20 left on the clock to make the score 5-2.
On Saturday, the Colonials won off a Klimpke goal with 7:09 left in second period. RMU goaltender Lucas Massie got a 33-save shutout in the victory.
RMU women head to Penn State for outdoor battle
The RMU women’s team next travels to Penn State to take on the Nittany Lions in a special outdoor game at Beaver Stadium at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30. The women will head back indoors for their second matchup at 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31.
RMU enters play with an overall record of 10-16-2 and a 6-10-2 mark in Atlantic Hockey America action.
The Colonials are coming off a two-game sweep at the hands of Mercyhurst last weekend, dropping both games by identical 5-1 scores in Erie.
Mercyhurst kicked things off in the first period of the first meeting by scoring a power play goal with 3:37 left in the first period to take a 1-0 lead.
Mercyhurst Forward Sofia Nuutinen, who got the home team on the board in the first, cashed in for her second of the game less than four minutes into the second period to give Lakers the 2-0 lead.
Less than two minutes later, RMU captain Alaina Giampietro cut the lead in half with a goal. But with 6:33 left in the second, Mercyhurst forward Sophie McKinley extended the Lakers’ lead to 3-1.
Less than four minutes into the third period, Mercyhurst increased its lead following a power play goal from Julia Perjus. A little over four minutes later, Mercyhurst forward Jessica Ciarrocchi cashed in and widened the lead to 5-1, which ended up being the final score.
In the second game, RMU opened the scoring with a power play goal from forward Morgan Giannone just over six minutes into the opening period to make it 1-0. However, with just under seven minutes to play in the period, Mercyhurst struck with a power play goal of its own from forward Julia Schalin.
With 9:11 left in the second period, Perjus scored her second goal of the weekend, giving Mercyhurst the 2-1 lead. Mercyhurst forward Jade Maisonneuve stretched the lead to 3-1 with 3:05 left in the second period.
Just a minute and 21 seconds into the third period, Mercyhurst forward Berlin Lolacher made it 4-1, and a minute later, Lakers defenseman Holly VanNetten scored the final goal of the game.
