RMU hockey: Men host Long Island back-to-back at home; women welcome Mercyhurst for pair

The Robert Morris men’s hockey team will play a pair of non-conference home games against Long Island University Friday and Saturday night, Nov. 7-8, at the RMU Island Sports Center.  Both games will begin at 7 p.m.

Robert Morris is 2-3-1 overall and 2-0 in Atlantic Hockey America Conference play while LIU is 2-5 overall.

The Colonials are coming off a pair of conference victories against the University of Niagara Purple Eagles Friday and Saturday, Oct. 31 and Nov. 1.

In the first game, played at the RMU Island Sports Center, Jackson Reineke and Cameron Garvey scored goals for the Colonials, but in each case, Niagara answered with goals of its own. It wasn’t until the third period when Tanner Klimpke scored two goals that the Colonials were able to secure a 4-2 victory.

The teams traveled to Niagara Falls, N.Y., Saturday evening for the second game and RMU jumped out to a 3-0 lead on goals by Klimpke, Ryan Taylor and George Krotiris – a lead that it would hold through the second period.

The Purple Eagles battled back in the third period with two goals, but a goal by RMU’s Braden Rourke put the finishing touches on 4-3 win. In goal, Charlie Schenkel holds a 3.67 GAA. Niagara is 3-3 overall and 0-2 in conference.

Robert Morris currently sits in fourth place in the AHA, and the Colonials will attempt to extend their win streak against LIU.

RMU Women Take on Mercyhurst in Conference Battle this Weekend

The Robert Morris women’s hockey team will play its geographically closest conference opponent, the Mercyhurst Lakers from Erie, in back-to-back conference games at the RMU Island Sports Center this weekend.  Both games Friday and Saturday start at 3 p.m.

The Colonials, 5-7 overall and 3-3 in conference, are in fourth place in the Atlantic Hockey America Conference, while Mercyhurst is 5-6-1 overall and 2-2 in conference for fifth place.

The games against the Lakers will be an opportunity for the Colonials to get back into the win column after dropping a pair of home conference games to the sixth-ranked Penn State Nittany Lions last weekend.

In the first game on Halloween, after a scoreless first period, the Nittany Lions took control scoring four consecutive goals for 4-0 victory.

The next evening saw a repeat performance, as Penn State scored two goals in both the second and third periods for another 4-0 win.  The first place Nittany Lions are now 11-0 overall and 7-0 in conference.
