Six was the lucky number Saturday for both the Robert Morris men’s and women’s hockey teams, with the women blanking Delaware, 6-0, and the men topping Canisius, 6-4, in an Atlantic Hockey America doubleheader at Clearview Arena on Neville Island.
In the women’s game, the Colonials came in having defeated Delaware Friday, 3-2, breaking their six-game losing streak. The Blue Hens, in their inaugural season, were trying to snap a 16-game losing streak and looked to avoid getting swept by RMU in the season series.
RMU received a power play opportunity less than five minutes into the game after Delaware captain Tiana McIntyre was called for interference, but the Colonials could not convert. But with 8 minutes, 21 seconds left in the period, the Colonials opened the scoring on a shot from defender Kaitlyn Schooley for her first goal of the season in her 100th career collegiate game.
Delaware had an opportunity to get even after RMU was whistled for a five-minute major and a game misconduct for head contact with 18:32 remaining, but the Colonials killed off that penalty. Just 21 seconds later, RMU extended its lead to 2-0 on a goal from captain Alaina Giampietro, her 13th of the season.
Fourteen seconds later, the Giampietro added another to put her team up 3-0. At 8:07, RMU received an opportunity to add to its lead, as Delaware defender Bailey Gray was penalized for kneeing. With three seconds left in the power play, the Colonials cashed in, with forward Morgan Giannone scoring her 12th goal of the season to make it 4-0 RMU.
With 13:49 left to play, RMU increased its lead to 5-0, thanks to Catriona Crarer’s third goal of the season. The Colonials kept pouring it on, as forward Laura Eustace scored her first goal of the season, which made the final score 6-0.
The Colonials improved to 12-18-2 overall and 8-12-2 in conference play, while the Fightin’ Blue Hens fell to 2-30-0 overall and 1-23-0 in divisional play. RMU next hosts Lindenwood at Clearview Arena at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 13.
RMU men earn third straight win by beating Canisius
The RMU men’s team extended its unbeaten streak to three games with its 6-4 victory over Canisius Saturday. The Colonials came in on the heels of a 1-0 win over Canisius Friday, handing the Golden Griffins their second loss in the previous three games.
It took Canisius only 23 seconds to take a 1-0 lead after forward Hunter Price had an incredible diving effort to bury a shot past RMU goalie Lucas Massie glove side for his fifth goal of the season.
The Golden Griffins extended their lead to 2-0 after Price capitalized on a two-on-one for his second of the game with 8:34 left in the first. The Colonials cut the lead in half with 3:34 left in the period on a shot from forward Connor Gourley for his second goal of the season. RMU then tied the game 2-2 with 2:27 left after a flurry of saves led to a goal from defenseman Dominic Elliott, his fifth of the season.
Just nineteen seconds later, Canisius regained the lead with forward Walter Zacher’s 15th goal of the season.
RMU missed a chance to tie the score when RMU forward Bruce McDonald was awarded a penalty shot, but he could not convert. But at 13:49, RMU forward Trent Wilson wristed a shot up over Canisius goalie Petter Wickström Stumer for his third goal of the season to tie the game up at 3-3.
With 3:53 to go in the third period, McDonald redeemed himself after the missed penalty shot, scoring his third of the season to give the Colonials the 4-3 lead. Just over a minute later, with 2:48 to go, Canisius forward Kash Rasmussen buried his second goal of the season to tie the game back up at 4-4.
With both teams playing a man short due to matching penalties, the Colonials capitalized on the open ice, as just 41 seconds into the third period, Wilson buried his second goal of the game to put RMU back up top 5-4.
Canisius had one more power play opportunity to tie the game, but RMU successfully killed it, and Cameron Garvey tacked on an empty-net goal with 10.7 seconds left to close the scoring.
Robert Morris improved to 9-16-3 overall, and 9-9-2 in conference play. Canisius fell to 14-12-2 overall, and 9-9-2 in conference play. The Colonials next travel to Niagara to take on the Purple Eagles at 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 13.
