RMU hockey: Women take on Delaware Thursday in AHA playoff opener

The Robert Morris Colonials women’s hockey team takes on the Delaware Fightin’ Blue Hens in the first round of the Atlantic Hockey America conference playoffs at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 19, in St. Charles, Mo.

The RMU women finished the regular season with a 12-20-2 record. The Colonials struggled toward the end of the season, winning just two of their final 10 games and finishing next-to-last in their conference.

The women will be led by forward Jessica MacKinnon, who finished the regular season with 25 assists and 39 points, leading the team in both categories. Forward Alaina Giampietro scored a team-high 16 goals during the regular season, and goaltender Maggie Hatch led the way in net with 10 wins.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens finished with a 2-30-0 record, and a 1-23-0 conference record, finishing last in their division. Forward Kaitlin Finnegan led the way for Delaware with seven goals and 11 points in its first season of AHA play, and goalie Charlotte Payne finished with a .913 save percentage in 19 games this season.

RMU took on Delaware this season four times, with the Colonials winning all four games. The Colonials outscored the Fightin’ Blue Hens 19-2 in the four matchups, with MacKinnon leading with four goals and 12 points in those four games. The Colonials last matched up against Delaware on Feb. 6-7.

The winner of Thursday’s game will take on Lindenwood, which finished in third place in the conference, at 11:45 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, in St. Charles..
