The Robert Morris men’s basketball team will look to get back on track Sunday when Purdue-Fort Wayne comes to town for a 2 p.m. Horizon League matchup at the UPMC Events Center in Moon Township.
The Mastodons are 9-8 overall and 3-3 in league action and are led by Corey Hadnot, who is averaging 20.3 points per game. The Colonials and Purdue-FW are currently tied for seventh place in the league.
Robert Morris is 11-6 overall and 3-3 in conference after a surprising conference loss to the Oakland Golden Grizzlies in Michigan over the weekend.
Oakland’s Isaac Garrett scored a career-high 30 points and added six rebounds and three steals in the Grizzlies’ 96-73 win. Oakland’s defense stifled the Colonials, registering seven steals, and its inside game resulted in 48 points in the paint. Overall, the Grizzlies shot 53.6% from the field and 89.2% from the free-throw line.
Robert Morris trailed 51-40 at halftime and was never able to recover. DeSean Goode continued his impressive play for RMU with 18 points and eight rebounds. Nikolaos Chitkoudis and Ryan Prather added eight points each, and Albert Vargas had seven points for the Colonials.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
RMU hosts Purdue-Fort Wayne Thursday
The Robert Morris women’s basketball team will host Purdue-Fort Wayne at 6 p.m. Thursday at the UPMC Events Center on the Robert Morris campus. Purdue-FW is riding a two-game win streak and is 11-5 overall and 5-1 in the Horizon League. The Mastadons are led by Alana Nelson, who is averaging 17.8 points per game and shooting 43.2% from 3-point range. Robert Morris enters the game 10-4 overall and 3-2 in the league.
The Colonials are looking to rebound after a 21-point road loss to the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay Phoenix Sunday. RMU had a difficult time with the first-place Phoenix’s defense, shooting only 29% from the field and committing 15 turnovers.
Noa Givon scored 13 points to lead RMU, which trailed 32-10 at halftime, and Mariam Traore added seven. Robert Morris is in fourth place in the Horizon League.
MEN’S HOCKEY
Colonials travel to New York to take on RIT
The Robert Morris men’s hockey team will travel to Rochester, N.Y., to play back-to-back games against the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) Tigers in Atlantic Hockey America Conference action. The games are scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9, and 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 10. The games are currently scheduled to be broadcast on Sportsnet Pittsburgh.
RIT enters the series at 9-7-2 overall and 7-5 in conference. The third-place Tigers are led by Christian Catalano, who has six goals and seven assists, and Evan Konyen, who has scored seven goals and added five assists. The Colonials are in seventh place in the AHA and are 4-12-2 overall and 4-5-1 in conference play.
The Colonials will be looking to return to the win column after a 3-1 conference loss to the Sacred Heart Pioneers Saturday at the Clearview Arena in the Robert Morris University Island Sports Center.
The Pioneers scored first on a goal by Cole Galata early in the first period, but RMU’s Connor Gourley answered with a goal midway through the period to tie the score. Vitaly Levyy scored at 14:23 to give the Pioneers a 2-1 lead at the end of the opening period.
After a scoreless second period, Sacred Heart’s Liam Lesakowski scored early in the third period for the final goal of the game. Robert Morris peppered the net with numerous shots, but Teagan Kendrick was a stalwart in net for the Pioneers with 46 saves. Croix Kochendorfer had 34 saves for the Colonials.
WOMEN’S HOCKEY
Robert Morris to host Syracuse Orange
The Robert Morris women’s hockey team will play back-to-back Atlantic Hockey America Conference games against the Syracuse Orange at the RMU Island Sports Center on Neville Island. The games are scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9, and 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 10.
The Orange are 10-11-3 overall and 6-6-2 in AHA action, while the Colonials are 10-12-2 overall and 6-6-2 in conference. The teams are tied for fourth place in the AHA. Syracuse will be led by Emma Gnade, who has eight goals and six assists, as well as Peyton Armstrong with four goals and eight assists.
Jessica McKinnon leads the Colonials with 13 goals and 15 assists, Morgan Giannone has nine goals and 11 assists, and Alaina Giampietro has scored 11 goals and added six assists. Other Colonial top scorers include Linnea Misner (four goals, 12 assists) and Taylor Storey (six goals, six assists).
Maggie Hatch has a 2.29 goals-against average in net for RMU and has recorded three shutouts.
